Mike Morhaime on F2P and WoW

In an interview taken during Blizzcon 2011, held this past October, Blizzard Entertainment president and co-founder Mike Morhaime stated his opinion on the Free-to-Play trend in MMOs and how he feels World of Warcraft should be in this new market.

On the subject, Morhaime says: “I think that there’s an underlying, a fundamental assumption right now, that the less you charge, the more money you make. Which isn’t true. And it doesn’t necessarily make for a better game. I mean, everybody likes free… I think that definitely, players have seen a lot of really great quality free-to-play experiences, but I’m not sure it’s the best model for us right now,”

It?s debatable whether or not F2P would be better for WoW, but WoW has been on a decline among MMO gamers, with many leaning to F2P games, such as Lord of the Rings Online and even new P2P games such as Rift and The Old Republic.
