Bungie today announced that the latest Destiny beta event is officially underway on PlayStation consoles, prompting thousands of players to flood the PlayStation Network and cause a flood of problems after its initial release. Players that have pre-ordered the game from certain retail outlets, or through the PlayStation Network, are now able to log in and experience the world of Destiny for free. As an additional incentive, as if we needed any, a special event will launch on Saturday 26th that will see special in-game badges rewarded to all participants.

Within minutes of the download being made available the PlayStation Store was suffering from regular periods of downtime with players receiving a “currently under maintenance” error message. Many users also reported problems with the share codes offered to pre-order customers with a variety of errors

The developers also revealed a Destiny Companion app that will allow players to track several in-game stats and features:

From the creators of Halo and Bungie.net,
the official Destiny Companion App connects to your Destiny adventure
wherever life finds you. Inspect your Guardian, analyze player stats,
and compare your Grimoire score.  Keep in touch with your friends in the
Bungie Community via forums, groups, or private messaging and track
them down on  the PlayStation Network or Xbox LIVE. And, receive the
latest news and updates about Destiny.
