World of Warcraft (WoW) is a Fantasy MMORPG developed and published by Blizzard Entertainment. Set in the Warcraft universe, World of Warcraft takes place on the world of Azeroth. It currently features four expansions; The Burning Crusade, Wrath of Lich King, Cataclysm, and Mists of Pandaria. Over seven million people have subscribed to World of Warcraft, making it the largest MMORPG ever released.

Players can chose from two factions in World of Warcraft; the Horde and the Alliance. The Horde (aka the “bad guys”) is made up of Orcs, Trolls, the Undead, the Tauren, Blood Elves and Goblins. The Alliance (aka the “good guys”) is comprised of Night Elves, Humans, Dwarves, the Draenei, the Worgen and Gnomes. A new race, the Pandaren, are free to chose either faction. Each race has a certain number of classes it can play that tailor to that race’s natural attributes.

WoW has a tremendous team focus, especially at higher levels, relying on the “holy trifecta” (tank, healer, DPS) to take down large dungeons and bosses. If you’re interested in solo play, WoW boasts the largest amount of quests and expansions ever released.

Wild Terra is a Massively multiplayer online role-playing game with open world. WAKFU is an online tactical turn-based MMORPG based on the cross-media brand by Ankama Games.   WAKFU is set within the same fantasy universe as Dofus, another massively multiplayer online role-playing game, but takes place approximately 1,000 years later, after a catastrophic world event known as the Great Deluge.

Fans of the original game will immediately notice some familiar characters and environments but also see a lot of drastic new changes as well.  Players will step into the role of a hero?s spirit reincarnated and sent back to rescue a land in turmoil.  Each hero must rebuild their chosen nation and form valuable allies within.

The game simulates an open sandbox style of gameplay where players are free to take up multiple professions or start a clan based war.  You will have the opportunity to storm into dungeon instances overflowing with monsters, conquer neutral zones with fellow comrades, start your own shop, or become the ruling governor. Join the Amakna, Bonta, Brakmar, or Sufokia nation and choose between 13 starting classes.

The game includes 13 different classes: Sacriers, Iops, Cras, Eniripsas, Pandawas, Enutrofs, Sadidas, Rogues, Fecas, Srams, Ecaflips, Xelors, and Osamodas. Each class has their own separate special abilities and draw backs.  A great part of the class structure is that no matter which class you choose, they all have access to the same professions, including: farming, herbalism, lumberjack, trapping, mining, fishing, baking, cooking, weapons, armorer, jeweler, tailor, leather dealer, and handyman, so you have plenty of options to make a living in the world of Wakfu.  Item prices can fluctuate depending on how many people are practicing a particular profession at a time.

The combat in game is turn-based, similar to the type featured in the Final Fantasy Tactics game series. Fans of those games will enjoy this playing style very much, especially considering the fact that other players can be attacked at will in PvP. Beware, though! Attack an innocent person and you risk losing citizenship points and being classified as an outlaw; attack an outlaw and you?ll gain citizenship points.

Vindictus

Vindictus is a free-to-play fantasy MMORPG featuring fast-paced, hack and slash combat. Developed in Korea by devCAT, the game actually serves as a prequel to the popular MMORPG, Mabinogi. Though taking place in the same world, the events of Vindictus occur 700 years earlier.

Beginning the game, players select one character (from a main cast of six) to play as for the duration of the game: each with their own skills and advantages. Customizations to characters are purely aesthetic as abilities are predetermined. Additional items (apparel or stat modifiers) can be purchased through in-game shops located throughout the world for collected gold or via microtransactions.

Vindictus’ story follows an episodic structure (each episode having its own unique quests and locations) with new episodes being released every six months. Players receive gold, items and additional health points at the end of each episode which serves to greatly benefit players in those to follow.

Though teaming up with other players is certainly not required to complete the game, doing so is encouraged as it makes progress more achievable and the overall play experience more enjoyable. Enemies scale in difficulty as more players are added, though it should be noted that overall, added help increases the odds of completion.

Utilizing Valve’s Source Engine, Vindictus boasts crisp graphics and smooth gameplay. Environments are destructible and can be utilized as player weapons. This advantage adds variety and helps to keep gameplay fresh. Those looking for fast-paced, action-oriented gameplay should look no further.

Velvet Sundown is a brand new free to play dramagame from Tribe Studios. In the game, you are aboard a luxury yacht, where you will play through hundreds of different experiences, based on how you interact with others. The game is all about social reactions between all the players.

The game is a little bit like the board game clue, in the way that you will have to interact with others to find out different things about them, and ultimately whether or not you want to pursue different avenues. Velvet Sundown is as much of a role-playing game that you can get. There is no combat, no raiding and no loot. But for those of you with a strong imagination, that can put yourself into the scenarios laid out for you, you will love this dramagame.

Unlike many other survival MMOs, where players turn on each other for sport, in Unturned you focus more on working with other players to survive the zombie infestation. In the game you will form a group and fortify locations, scavenge for supplies and try to live off the land while keeping everyone alive. Unturned is constantly taking player feedback into consideration, and much of the game is being built by what you have to say to the developer in making the game a better place.

While Unturned is still in the first public release of the game, new features will continue to be added constantly. Community feedback has helped, and will continue to drive the developer to adding new features and graphics, as is evident from the first prototype of the game, to the version that you see today.

The Secret World

The Secret World from Funcom takes players into a different reality from their own. This MMORPG represents the world of today with a different view. As the world around players breaks down from plagues, zombies and other world ending disasters players join one of three different factions; the Dragon, the Illuminati and the Templars. These three factions have different stories, pasts and futures that molds the world around them.

The three different factions leads to a perfect system for PvP. There are three different modes that allow for different types of multiplayer experiences. If small skirmishes are what you’re looking for, fight clubs offer a small scale battle ring that can be done quickly with battles being as small as 2v2 or as big as 10v10. If larger scale battles sound better, the Battlefields and War Zones may be more appropriate. The Battlefield is a capture the flag like game that gives factions special upgrades and bonuses for winning. The Warzone is a 24/7 persistent PvP that changes as the three different factions fight over facilities. No matter which place you choose there is some form of PvP for any MMORPG fan.

One of the most interesting mechanics of The Secret World is character progression. Instead of focusing on levels and locking people into a specific classes, The Secret World does something different. Using certain weapons, skills and other moves gives players proficiency which unlocks new skills. Players can change their skills and proficiencies at any time.

The Secret World sets a very dark mood in an alternate reality from our own. The gameplay mechanics matched with the real world setting provide a fiction that is fun to be a part of. There is a ton of good stories in all three factions that are worth exploring. Check out this game because it is very unique.

The Mighty Quest for Epic Loot is an action-RPG and tower defense game rolled into one. Developed by Ubisoft, The Mighty Quest takes players on two completely different paths as your main goal of collecting treasure and experience plays out. The game takes a light-hearted approach while players construct castles with deadly traps and monsters to protect your castle from deadly looters, while letting you take on other players castles in search for you own fortunes.

The game is split into two parts. On the offensive side you will venture into other players castles and try to get to the end by blasting through enemies and traps that they have laid out for you. This part of the game is more a traditional hack ‘n slash style like Diablo. Your character will gain experience and loot once, and if, you complete the castle, where you can then rate the experience.

On the defensive side you will create your own castle much like a tower defense game. Choose traps and monsters along with the areas that they roam as you try to build an impenetrable fortress. Your goal is to protect the loot at the end of your castle, you do this by trying to lay out castle out as difficult as possible.

Swordsman Online (also known as just Swordsman) is a free-to-play MMORPG from Perfect World Entertainment. Swordsman Online is based on the popular novel, The Smiling, Proud Wanderer by Louis Cha, with Chinese martial arts being central to the game’s visuals and combat style. The game has seen massive success in the Chinese market for a number of years and is finally being localized for a western audience thanks to efforts from PWE.

Players will take on the role of a wandering warrior whose journey leads him/her on an unexpected adventure to avenge their destroyed village and become a great hero. Player and guild actions will dynamically alter the world, changing the environment according to user decisions. Towns can be saved or demolished, unique NPCs and quests can become available and secrets may reveal themselves, all based on the elaborate branching narrative of player choice.

There are ten different schools of martial arts available in Swordsman Online, of which players will choose one to follow. Combat is heavily action-based and relies less on character stats and more on player skills. Quick reflexes and mastering your character’s movement and abilities will give players a distinct upper hand in both PvE and PvP combat. One unique feature of Swordsman Online is that publisher Perfect World Entertainment chose to preserve the essence and culture of the Chinese version by adding subtitles to the Chinese cutscenes rather than dubbing over with English voice actors. Potentially a polarizing decision, it allows the player to experience the game as it was originally intended.

Swordsman Online saw full release in July of 2014 (Release Date: July 29th) and is, of course, free-to-play for all users.

Spirit Tales

Spirit Tales is a free to play fantasy MMO produced by Koram Games. It is the all English version of the game Glory Destiny Online. Right after loading up the game it has a soft casual feel to it. The soundtrack is light hearted and fun, and the sound effects are equally joyful.

The character creations are reminiscent of the game ?Animal Crossing?  for the DS, the characters are very well made and Koram boasts of over 40 million different character setups. From head to toe the style and colour of your characters look is up too you. Spirit tales features 6 classes from 3 tribes, ranging from a long range DPS archer to a strong Warrior tank. There is also characters such as the fighter, a close range melee DPS. Also a shaman class more desirable for support characters. There is also an assassin class as a rouge type of character and a Sorcerer being more of a damage dealing magic character. All these classes work together to form a well rounded game.

After creating a character you jump right into the action. There is a small cut scene showing you the story behind the game, based on the classic good versus evil, where you must conquer those who have become corrupted. The quest lines following are wonderful and helpful. The simple right click to travel to your destination and the slay away. The quest lines are fun to read and helpful, they push you along in the direction you need to go. They always have helpful tips and tricks after levelling and finishing quests.  The levelling goes rather quickly and is fun to go through, each level you will attain one skill point which you can allocate to the skill you choose. Bearing in mind you have the level enough to do it. There is no stats as in other MMO?s like attack strength or vitality, instead you level your passive skills to build your character how you would like.

A unique aspect to Spirit Tales is the pets in game. One can be merged to yourself giving you small blessing that will help in combat. You can also call a pet out into battle to fight with you. Each pet having a special set of skills as well as special attacks. Any monster in the game can be captured and taken as a pet once it is below 50% health. This allows you to take a certain pet if you are looking to add a certain attribute to your character.

There is a small item mall where you can purchase items that can help you in game. Things like health potions, extra clothes and other small things along the way. The fashion is fun and new, although there is a lack of mature type clothing. All of it is bunny and rabbit, with pink and purple, and sky blue.

The crafting is an interesting and allows you to build your own weapons. Materials can be gained through killing monsters and new weapons can be crafted as you level up. You can also craft ornaments if you can find the mold. These weapons can be refined to add damage, or add sockets to add certain bonuses to your weapons.

Lastly, Spirit Tales features an interesting achievement system which allows players to set goals and or achieving them. These titles also give small bonuses and allow you to increase attack, health or defense.

All in all, Spirit Tales is a great free to play fantasy game. It is a laid back game for easy going gamers.  So if your looking for a new mmo to try definitely give spirit tales a try, you won?t be disappointed!
