Drakensang Review

Rating: 6

Intro: Drakensang Online is a free-to-play fantasy themed MMO version of the PC game called The Dark Eye: Drakensang. The objective is to quest through the lands to defeat the evil dragon. The graphics leave much to be desired, the screen is too small not to be put into full screen and when it is, the graphics blur. Fans of old-school dungeon crawl games like Diablo and Runes of Magic will like this game.

Storyline:

In this mystical world full of wonder and peril, long-forgotten creatures have started to re-emerge from the shadows of history. After witnessing the rise of humans, these creatures were pushed to the brink of extinction and forced into hiding. Their world crumbled and a new empire was born. Yet time has broken the new order that was meant to last for an eternity, and dark minions have gathered their strength and unleashed humanity’s oldest foe:The dragon. Filled with a terrifying wrath built up over centuries, the dragon and its followers now wage a brutal war on the world. A deadly new era is dawning and humanity needs a new kind of hero to fight for the very survival of mankind.

The time has come for a new order of warrior to step into battle and fight the terrifying dragons and savage monsters of the Anderworld. Join your comrades to wage a brutal war against evil. As a fearless Dragonknight freedom fighter or a wise and magical Spellweaver, you must unite with your fellow warriors within the Drakensang Online game and learn new skills for one last, epic struggle for freedom. Across a vast range of landscapes, through treacherous swamps, forests, caves and cities, you must wage war against dragons, witches and monsters, drawing upon an impressive armory of weapons and a bewildering array of magic and spells at your disposal.

Features:

Nine main regions to explore: Grimmagstone, Wiltwuxshire, Kingshill, Slifmoor, Shorfolk, Teganswall, Torstrond, Norselands, and Loxley Caverns.

Three different classes, DragonKnight, SpellWeaver and Ranger. Each have ther own purpose and skill set.

The lack of tutorial at the beginning may bother some people but others may like this ‘dive-in head-first’ quality.

There?s nothing new from the game?s UI, but everything is clearly laid out and the option to rearrange skills is provided.  If you combine both the mouse and keybinding bars down the bottom of the screen, there?s currently enough room to have every skill available to a class at your fingertips.

Combat is quite tactical with mobs coming out at you from all angles you have to think on your feet. AOE, cone and splash damage skills are all available and can be switched around on the fly on the skill bar for maximum effectiveness in any situation.

There are plenty of quests, the usual plethora of fetch, kill and carry tasks.

There is a crafting system on Drakensang but it may frustrate some people as it is quite random. You may want a certain ‘blue’ item and to do this you must combine a number of ‘green’ items. However, as the item you receive is random you may end up with a ring instead of the sword you wanted.

For people who like PvP, there are a few ways you can fight other players.  Firstly, players can register for world PvP for a small fee which makes them able to engage in combat with other players on PvE servers.  There?s also a PvP server where this is on all the time.  Otherwise you can choose between a 1v1 duel, 3v3 team deathmatch or 5v5 capture the flag.

End game there is little to do which spoils the game a little. There is legendary armour to collect but you have to kill the hardest boss on the game to receive it so as there is nothing harder to use it on it may seem a little pointless.

Drakensang Online may be enjoyable to a set of players who enjoy this niche of gaming but I feel that most people will be put off by the bad points of this game.
