Nobody enjoys sitting down to play their favorite MMO and being greeted with an unexpected maintenance screen or login queue but it’s becoming all too familiar for fans of the massively multiplayer experience as yet another DDoS victim is claimed. In recent months Trion Worlds’ ArcheAge fell victim to such an assault, quickly followed by Wurm Online’s DDoS attacks before most recently, the attacks on Blizzards servers during the launch of Warlords of Draenor.
Square Enix’s revived MMO, Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, has become the latest victim of a DDoS campaign as the developers confirmed earlier today. The attacks have caused a huge number of problems logging into the game and many players that are fortunate enough to get through find themselves kicked to the curb that is IRL all too quickly. The tech support team are working on the problem and hope to have it addressed soon.

“We would like to take this opportunity to make a report regarding the login difficulties that took place over the last few days. Currently we are experiencing DDoS attacks from an anonymous third-party targeting the FINAL FANTASY XIV game servers on the NA/EU data center.
However with the attack we are currently experiencing, only a massive number of access attempts are being made to the server where both character data and personal information of our customers are not in danger of being exposed.
Our technical staff is taking every possible measure to address this issue but the attack is still continuing to take place by changing their methods at every moment. We will continue to monitor and work on recovery from every possible angle.”[/quote]
We’ll be sure to keep you apprised as the story unfolds.
