Wargaming, developer of the popular free-to-play MMO title World of Tanks, has purchased Gas Powered Games (GPG). Wargaming will now take full ownership over the struggling studio and will, in the process, incorporate a number of its talented developers and staff: Chris Taylor, company founder and CEO included.
GPG has had a rough start to the new year after being hit by layoffs in January, all while dealing with an underwhelming Kickstarter campaign for their proposed action-RPG, Wildman. The campaign has since been canceled, leaving the project’s future unknown.
Both Wargaming and GPG have expressed nothing but warm words and excitement over the acquisition. Wargaming CEO Victor Kislyi praised the Seattle-based studio in stating that “Gas Powered Games has a long track record of providing incredibly engaging AAA gaming experiences and we can’t wait to start working with them.”
Confident that the deal will be mutually beneficial, GPG’s Chris Taylor commented on Wargaming’s massive ascendancy in recent years, saying, “… we’re looking forward to joining one of the fastest growing game companies in the world. I’m sure our experience and expertise will help us contribute even more to Wargaming’s global success.”
Plans for the newly acquired GPG are being kept under wraps for the time being, though Wargaming looks “forward to sharing more about what they’ll be working on at a later date.” (Joystiq)
