This past Tuesday Runescape, a free to play MMORPG released an update known as ?Bot Nuking Day?. It was intended to catch up to 98% of players who bot and put an end to it once and for all. However, today Jagex announced they have sent out cease and desist emails to suspected botters threatening to sue them. Yes you read that correctly, the are threatening to sue gamers who bot for damages ranging from $200-$2,500 per act of past, present and/or future botting. Players were given a chance at repentance however, a one time amnesty if they come clean from their past botting sins. If they choose to do this they will be placed on a watch list and their account will be monitored for the use of bots and other inappropriate third party programs. Should you continue to bot you will be named as a defendant in Jagex Limited v. John Does, which is a lawsuit based on DMCA violations that is currently pending in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California. Jagex clearly is not messing around but it does make you think the ?Bot Nuking Day? did not go off exactly as planned. You would think if they caught 98% of botters they would have no real reason to sue. I also find it hard they are going to hold a 12 year old game responsible for $2,500 worth of botting damages. A better suggestion would be a more secure game and better a better bot nuking strategy. What are your thoughts?
