3DS Mickey game looks to appeal to older gamers

The first details of the handheld companion to the upcoming Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two, titled Epic Mickey: Power of Illusion have broken today, and if you’re old enough to remember gaming on your old Sega, you’ll want to take notice. The game is planned as a follow-up to the Genesis classic, Castle of Illusion starring Mickey Mouse.

Coming by way of a detailed preview in this month’s Nintendo Power, the details leaked to both About and NeoGAF earlier today. Reportedly, the game is being developed by DreamRift, and while it’s not at all a port of Power of Two, it will put the 3DS touch screen to work with Epic Mickey’s paint/thinner mechanics. The graphics will consist entirely of hand-drawn sprites, and stages will be drawn from the entirety of Disney’s past, from Peter Pan to Tangled. It seems Oswald will be joining Mickey and Minnie as playable characters.

It seems like Disney is actually willing to take a chance on the handheld platform and really put some effort and love into this version of the game, and I really hope it works out for them. Expect to see lots more about this title, including plenty of screenshots, when April’s Nintendo Power hits shelves.

Epic Mickey: Power of Illusion will be aiming for a fall 2012 release.
