A letter written by Brad Lee, the CEO of the World Cyber Games, was leaked onto the internet today detailing Lee?s concerns regarding the change in the games industry, with games focused more towards mobile gaming as opposed to the more traditional games on PC and console:
?… We made a hard decision that we should bring the mobile, new key sector in the game industry, in our event concept. Hence, WCG decided to start the Mobile Game-Based Festival… the official game titles of WCG will consist of mobile games.?
The World Cyber Games, an international competition, predates popular Major League Gaming. Originally backed by the South Korean government, WCG sees participants from over 70 countries compete against each other in various games including?StarCraft II,?Counter-Strike 1.6?and?Tekken.
With such an important role in eSports, being one of the largest international competitions, many internet commentators believe that the letter is in fact a hoax, claiming that the letter must be an early April Fools joke. However, with the sponsorship of major mobile manufacturer, Samsung, as well as a recent history of introducing mobile games, such as Gameloft?s?Ashphalt 6: Adrenaline, it may entirely be possible that a shift into mobile-based eSports is happening.
The letter so far has had no official confirmation from management at the WCG, leaving the seriousness of the letter up to speculation. However, should the contents be confirmed, it will be interesting to see how the future of the World Cyber Games unfolds, as well as the future of mobile games in eSports.
