A short while ago I wrote an article discussing the potential of next-gen MMO games but even I was surprised at the amount of MMO announcements at E3. Prior to the event Sony Online Entertainment announced the PS4 version of PlanetSide 2 but they failed to deliver any official confirmation on the subscription model.
During the E3 event President of Sony Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida said players will need to subscribe to PS Plus in order to experience the full features of next-generation MMO games. During the interview he stated that games such as The Elder Scrolls Online and Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn will require a PS Plus subscription but he also confirmed that PlanetSide 2 will be available as a truly free-to-play title.
“You will need it to enjoy online multiplayer. This will also depend on the judgement by the publishers, and there will be some free to play titles that you?ll be able to play without needing a PS Plus subscription, like PlanetSide 2 and DC Universe Online.”
In a perfect society this would not have needed any official confirmation, after-all the game is already available for free on the PC. But with the constant changes in freemium and pay-to-play models, nobody was certain until now. I’ve had my fill of PlanetSide 2 for the time being but I can see myself enjoying it with a whole new community on the PS4. How about you?
