A recent press release from Activision Blizzard Chief Executive Officer, Bobby Kotick, has shown that World of Warcraft still sits on the MMORPG game throne. The press release follows the Q1 2013 earnings results which saw profit margins that were “better than expected”.
?Our first quarter performance was driven by continued consumer interest in all of our key franchises. Blizzard Entertainment?s StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm was the #1 PC game for the quarter. Additionally, during the quarter, Blizzard?s World of Warcraft remained the #1 subscription based MMORPG in the world with more than eight million subscribers although the game saw declines of approximately 1.3 million subscribers, mainly from the East, but in the West as well.”
With the release of the Playstation 3 version of Diablo III on the horizon, things could get a lot better for Blizzard in the coming months. Although the recent game-breaking bug that allowed players to exploit trillions of gold probably hasn’t done a very good job of convincing current players to purchase the game on a second platform.
