Survive The Nights

Survive The Nights

Survive The Nights is an upcoming zombie survival MMO from a2z Interactive. Survive The Nights is a first-person multiplayer shooter with heavy emphasis on community and realistic survival techniques. The game debuted on Kickstarter with an initial funding goal of £12,000 but, thanks to good messaging and a promising premise, managed to smash that number and close out at a total of over £108,000. Stretch goals include the expansion of the development team, additional servers, a professional composer and a PS4 build.

Players will be thrown into Survive The Night’s post-apocalyptic world, filthy with deadly zombies and scarce of many of life’s necessities. In order to stand a chance, you will need to scavenge during the day: finding food, weapons, tools and shelter. Seek out shelter and fortify yourself in at night to protect yourself from the aggressive zombies that thrive in the darkness.

Survive The Nights promises a lot of features, many unique, others refining and enhancing already established tropes of the genre. Take, for example, food consumption. For many survival MMOs, players must consume food and water on a regular basis to avoid death: the player’s state of existence being totally white and black. Survive The Nights takes a more realistic approach and incorporates the diminishing physical condition of a human body lacking food. If a player hasn’t eaten for hours on end, their character starts to become sluggish. Slower movement speeds and a lower equipment load will be indications of a player slowly withering towards death.

Perhaps most importantly, a2z Interactive is attempting to tackle the hostile player community that comes with games of the survival MMO genre. ‘Kill on sight’ is being addressed with an affectable character mental state. Killing other players will lead to a breakdown, of sorts, causing the player to suffer from blurred vision, shaking hands and voices in the head. Take murdering to an inexcusable extent and it will result in automatic player suicide. PvP will remain an important feature of Survive The Night but with these unique features, it should exist as a more enjoyable experience for everyone involved.

Survive The Night promises a world that is immersive beyond what we have seen yet in a survival MMO. Every structure found on the game’s island is enterable, unique and inhabitable. Players are able to store their goods inside their structures, fortify their defenses with planks and furniture and set traps to protect them and their abode against invaders. Generators can be fueled and activated for power through the dark nights and stove tops can be used to cook food with out the use of an attention-attracting fire. Even players who prefer a more mobile lifestyle can repair vehicles and roam the countryside living out of their trunk.

Survive The Nights currently has a targeted release date of August 2015. For more information on Survive The Nights or announcements of an alpha, beta or full release, keep here to MMO ATK.

Firefly Online

Firefly Online

Firefly Online is a strategic MMORPG currently in development by Quantum Mechanix and Spark Plug Games. The game is based off the Joss Whedon cult classic TV show, Firefly. Playing as captain of a space ship, players will start with little-to-nothing and must work their way up, completing missions and trading with other players in the universe. The gameplay is inspired by the original TV show by emphasizing exploration and the player’s ability to survive in the Verse.

Much like Captain Mal Reynolds of the Firefly TV show, you begin as a struggling captain in the Verse. It will be up to you to assemble a crew and to customize a ship of your own. Setting out to explore, you can wreak havoc in space and planet-side all while interacting with other players — whether that be trading or competing. Unique social features have been promised to help you interact with other Firefly Online fans to make the most of your experience.

It was announced at Comic Con 2014 that the original cast of the Firefly TV show would be reprising their roles for the upcoming PC/Mac and Mobile Firefly MMO. While it’s still unknown the capacity to which they will be included, the announcement is momentous and reassuring to fans in keeping the game tied closely to the universe the TV show established.

Firefly Online is on track to release in Spring of 2015 for PC and Mac on Steam as well as on iOS and Android mobile devices. Cross-platform and cross-device playability have been confirmed, though no word yet on pricing models or compatible mobile devices.

But do not be fooled! Infinity is no simple exploration sim. It will feature fighting, trading and bartering, and vast exploration as well as character development. Divergence Online

Divergence online (DO) is a third person shooter and Sci-Fi MMORPG that is currently under development. The game recently launched a successful crowd-funding campaign lead by head developer Ethan Casner and Stainglass Llama Studios to receive funding for continued production. Ethan recently announced that DO will be a box title, meaning there will be a purchase price and a potential subscription model instead of a micro-transaction business model.

Divergence will feature a “hardcore” sandbox environment where player freedom is the main priority. The PvP system will be true to hardcore in that there will be open PvP at all times, anywhere in the world without exception, as well as potential for permanent death. The sandbox feature will allow for terrain modification such as raising, lowering and leveling, planting and farming, and gathering of natural resources or raw materials. There are four “Genomes” to chose from–humans, Veli, Lokri, and AI– with each respective genome having its own subdivisions of breeds.

Destiny

Destiny

Destiny is a highly anticipated first-person, Sci-Fi, shooter MMO developed by Bungie. It will be releasing for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on September 9, 2014. It is set hundreds of years in the future during a Golden Age where humans have spread throughout the universe and colonized different planets. A sudden “Collapse” causes tremendous chaos and leaves humanity in an isolated city. You must take on the role of defender and save your people from a violent alien race that threatens your already fragile existence.

Destiny will be set in an open world with a highly interactive environment. It will not be modeled after the traditional MMOs, instead it has been labeled as a “shared-world shooter.” The new Umbra 3 engine and updates to the matchmaking system will make this game unlike anything you’ve seen before. Bungie will also be incorporating Social media into Destiny, allowing players to stay attuned to living universe in Destiny as it will always be changing.

Keep an eye out for the beta as it is rumored to be launching sometime this summer!

The Secret World

The Secret World

The Secret World from Funcom takes players into a different reality from their own. This MMORPG represents the world of today with a different view. As the world around players breaks down from plagues, zombies and other world ending disasters players join one of three different factions; the Dragon, the Illuminati and the Templars. These three factions have different stories, pasts and futures that molds the world around them.

The three different factions leads to a perfect system for PvP. There are three different modes that allow for different types of multiplayer experiences. If small skirmishes are what you’re looking for, fight clubs offer a small scale battle ring that can be done quickly with battles being as small as 2v2 or as big as 10v10. If larger scale battles sound better, the Battlefields and War Zones may be more appropriate. The Battlefield is a capture the flag like game that gives factions special upgrades and bonuses for winning. The Warzone is a 24/7 persistent PvP that changes as the three different factions fight over facilities. No matter which place you choose there is some form of PvP for any MMORPG fan.

One of the most interesting mechanics of The Secret World is character progression. Instead of focusing on levels and locking people into a specific classes, The Secret World does something different. Using certain weapons, skills and other moves gives players proficiency which unlocks new skills. Players can change their skills and proficiencies at any time.

The Secret World sets a very dark mood in an alternate reality from our own. The gameplay mechanics matched with the real world setting provide a fiction that is fun to be a part of. There is a ton of good stories in all three factions that are worth exploring. Check out this game because it is very unique.

Star Trek Online

Star Trek Online

Star Trek Online is the franchise’s recent foray into the free to play MMO realm. Since the game’s launch, this has the first time Star Trek fans can explore the Star Trek universe on a truly massive, online scale.

This Star Trek MMO from Cryptic Studios allows players to determine their own fate in the galaxy as the Captain of a Federation Starship, or play the game as a Klingon Warlord and expand the Empire throughout the galaxy.

Not only will players have the opportunity to visit iconic locations from the popular Star Trek movies and books, but will also be able to reach out to unexplored star systems and make contact with new, undiscovered alien species. One of the things that we here at MMO ATK like the most are the Episode Missions. Every moment spent playing Star Trek Online feels like you’re playing through an episode from the show. New characters pop-up, new conflicts arise, and discovering new systems, aliens, and starships is really fun. We’ve spent the better half of a work day just customizing our ships.

That brings us to the next best part of Star Trek Online, customization!

Using Cryptic?s Total Customization technology, every ship in the game can be customized, from its shape, color, and overall construction. Your ship will retain that Star Trek “feel,” (as they so eloquently put it) but will also represent your own unique style.

Sci-Fi MMO players will have a great time, even if you’re not a Trekkie, but Star Trek fans are in for a buffet of Trekkie goodness.

So go on and immerse yourself in Star Trek MMO universe, just don’t ask us to beam you back after you get sucked in.

Planet Calypso

The Pitch:

Have you ever caught yourself playing an MMO and gone “You know what? This feels more like a job than actual fun.” If so, you’re likely not alone. I’m pretty sure the people behind Planet Calypso had the same thought and instead of viewing it as a downside they just decided to run with it. That’s how this scifi, F2P MMO was born. What sets it apart from most other MMOs is that all of that grinding, and mining and hunting and looting can actually result in real money. Like actual money, thanks to Planet Calypso’s real cash economy.

The Lowdown:

That’s right, because Planet Calypso’s in game currency is tied directly to the US dollar at a fixed 10 to 1 ratio. And the game allows you to deposit or withdrawal real, actual dollars at any time. Which is perfect for those times when you’re grinding away at some MMO task and you ask yourself, “Am I even having fun right now? This just feels like a second job!” Because then you can go, “Oh yeah, it kinda is.”

How it plays:

Planet Calypso Introduction Video

The Verdict:

So, are you’re going to get rich from playing Planet Calypso??? Probably not. There have always been ways for canny or skilled gamers to make some money from their hobby. And I wouldn’t be surprised if some people have made huge heaps of money from playing this game. But I’m sure they’re the exception not the rule. With a game like this it is likely best to play for the atmosphere and the richly developed scifi setting. For the feeling of being an actual space colonist and dreaming dreams that would make Elon Musk proud. So it is best to go into the experience by viewing the in-game economy as what it is: an interesting feature that adds complexity and realism to the game world.
