Pirates: Tides of Fortune

Pirates: Tides of Fortune is a free to play, browser based Pirate plundering game where you will breed life into your own civilization by collecting resources and constructing buildings. I know you’ve heard that whole line before, and yes, Pirates: Tides of Fortune is much like many of Kabam’s previous titles, but this particular MMORTS title adds a huge amount of production value that is not normally seen in this free to play genre. For one, the music / animations / voiceover work is very well done. It’s not often that you get full voice-over tutorials in a game such as this, and although most of you will probably skip right over it, knowing that they spent the time on these details means a lot of players who plan on playing the game more than just casually.

Of course there are some things about the game that leave something to be desired. The combat is pretty stale, and it’s hard to get a great feeling of accomplishment when you only simply tell your troops to attack, but don’t actually get a chance to command them. Also, like most city-sim games, as you level up, the building times increase greatly, which will often-times hamper the amount of time you get to actually play, and are spent time waiting. But that’s also the beauty of the genre, you are not locked in to playing one RTS game, in-fact i’m usually in 4-5 different games and can switch between them depending on when I have some resources / time to spend.

All in all, this is a very high quality RTS game that players of the genre will find enjoyable. The game can start off a bit slow, but as you venture through the tutorial and set out on your own, you’ll find a great experience.

Operation Gamma 41

Operation Gamma 41

Operation Gamma 41 (OG41) is a free online strategy game set in World War II. The game revolves around two factions, the ?Free Confederation? and ?Allied imperial Force?, as they confront each other on the battlefield. Operation Gamma 41 is an empire building game that is very innovative from the beginning, tying in the story line of World War 2 and engulfing the player in the drama of the war.

“A World torn apart by war, that is the truth of the early 20th Century. Nations tear each other apart and entire generations of men are sent into battle in a variety of war-machines to kill or be killed.  In 1941, Operation Gamma changed the war forever.

After nearly two years of bitter fighting, more and more countries were sucked into the wake of the war. The League of Nations, which had unsuccessfully worked to uphold peace since the last World War, watches helplessly as the Axis Forces and the Free Allies wage war on an unprecedented scale.

In a last attempt to stop the madness, the League’s head, Richard P. Ward, invites all the warring nation?s leaders to a final conference in Geneva.

With their troops evenly matched, and neither side able to gain a decisive victory, the leaders follow Ward?s call. The hint of a secret that would change the war and the chance to eye-up the competition was enough to bring them all together, for nobody dared to miss out. The world held its breath for a moment, could a path to peace be on the horizon?

Then came OG-Day… Everything changed that fateful day. As the radio transmission of the conference started, silence fell across the lands and battlefields alike. But something wasn?t right. There was only static noise coming from the radio, followed by otherworldly wails and screams. Then a hoarse whisper, a warning: “Gamma is coming”  When the first airplanes arrived at Geneva, they found a burning city.  In 1941, the world was left devoid of its leaders.”

Playable Factions

Free Allies
During the first days of chaos, some Commanders of the Free Allies saw their chance to take cities deep within mainland Europe. They pushed forward well into enemy territory in the hope that soon leadership would be restored and they would be honoured for their courage. But soon it became apparent, that neither orders nor backup would ever come again. Now caught between enemy forces, each of them struggles to establish a bastion of democracy and freedom.
Axis Forces
Ever marching onwards, Commanders of the Axis forced their way into the world. Devoid of new orders, they pushed further and further into enemy territory, using the chaos to conquer as many cities as they could. Drawn forward by their success, they had neglected to defend their own homeland. When the first Commanders came to their senses, they found themselves encircled by enemies and even their homeland partly occupied. Now they are establishing footholds to maybe one day retake what once was theirs.

Ikariam

Ikariam

Ikariam is a browser based strategy MMO where you build an ancient civilization in the Mediterranean during the time of the ancient Greeks. The game is all about building up your small city and turning it in to a mighty empire.

At the start of Ikariam you own a small fertile piece of land on the coast. Your goal, turning your small flourishing town into the capital of a mighty island empire beings here. There are five resources that you will need from around the islands to help you grow: Building Material, Wine, Marble, Crystal Glass and Sulphur. You will need a lot of building material, and sending workers to receive it should be your first priority.

Once you have a good amount of resources you can expand your town and build up your troops. Building an Academy is key for you to discover new technologies, while the barracks and trading ports will allow you to build your army and trade resources with other players. The game gives you four loyal advisors that will aid you in your journey.

Goodgame Empire

Goodgame Empire

In Goodgame Empire, players get to experience life as lord of a land. Go from building your small castle to the capital of an empire! Set up and operate a thriving economic state, and build your military forces to defend your holdings, and expand your borders. Join with other players and destroy any opposition, to become the ruler of a legacy!

Goodgame Empire is a browser base castle building game where you build things in real-time.  Graphics are cartoony and easy on the eyes.  The interface may be a little clunky, but most of the basic stuff is easy and intuitive to use.  The main objectives of the game is to accumulate resources such as wood, stone and food over time and then spend this building stuff and feeding your population and army.  There is some limited functionality for sending resources to others and therefore trading.  Goodgame Studios have also recently introduced outposts, which are like mini castles you can capture and build up from scratch.

In the game you receive quests, which are the only way to get experience, and they direct you to build certain building.  Gaining experience means gaining levels.  Gaining levels means more types of building and better soldiers to recruit.  Besides building stuff you also recruit armies and build siege equipment.  This means you can make use of this for attacking other players.  The combat itself is automatically resolved, but the setup and combat reports are complex enough to be interesting without being daunting.  Beating up other players gives you honor which will increase your ranking in the game as you gain more of it.

If you are in to City Building games give this one a try, you will not be sorry.

Winner of an MMO of the Year Award in 2013.

Godfather Five Families

Godfather Five Families

The Godfather Five Families is a browser based City manager game with a mafia theme.  The goal is to build up a criminal empire that you?ll use to attack other players, build up your neighborhood, train troops like arsonists and hitmen, and steadily improve your own personal Estate.  It?s 1935: ten years before the events of The Godfather film. New York?s Five Families are engaged in an all-out war for supremacy.  The war is heating up and smaller gangs are under pressure to join one of the Families or die.  Your father?s brutal injury leaves him unable to lead your family ? leaving it up to you.  You must take charge and keep your family?s criminal organization alive.

In addition to your own neighborhood you can take control of different areas of New York, but you?ll constantly be going up against other families to do so.  Once you have control of an area it will show your family crest, letting everyone know who?s in charge.  Higher level players will be given incentives to duke it out with players of the same or higher experience level allowing you to team up with other players to take control of the city.

Forge of Empires

Forge of Empires

Forge of Empires is a browser-based strategy game developed by InnoGames. In the game, players must, among other things, manage and produce resources, develop an army, gain control of provinces, and research their way through several pages of history and development.

You begin the game with your own plot of land.  A tutorial will walk you through the various menus and gives you options of what types of buildings to build.  You are taught how to build, research and unlock more buildings.  Like your typical city-building game, Forge of Empires allows you to build on various places on your plot of land.  One thing it does differently though allows you to move your buildings around, as well as sell them.

As your city grows you will need to generate more and more resources.  You will build up your army and send scouts out to ‘visit’ other areas of the map.  As you progress you will battle other cities, conquer new provinces and expand your empire.

The game is pretty straight-forward but gives you many options and new features that will keep you coming back again and again.
