Cloud Chamber

Cloud Chamber

Cloud Chamber is an indie adventure MMO coming from development studio Investigate North which largely seeks to break the mold of what is typically considered traditional gameplay and storytelling. In Cloud Chamber, you navigate through a virtual dataworld housing fragments of information which piece together to unravel the mystery of young scientist Kathleen Petersen. She risked everything to find the truth of the Cloud Chamber and save humanity from itself. Now the only remaining evidence is the information found on the database being explored. It’s a player driven game where individual enjoyment will stem from how invested you allow yourself to get.

Players will navigate more than 150 story fragments spanning 10 different levels in Cloud Chamber, each containing different clues ranging from videos, photos, documents, maps or transcripts. It’s a non-linear means of progression which allows a player to create a unique experience and reach a conclusion all their own. Of course, being an MMO, you won’t be solving the mystery on your own. Each bit of evidence is attached to a discussion board where players can discuss their theories and the significance of various details. Good theories get upvoted while unfavorable ones get downvoted. Presenting a supported theory will grant you access to even more data to help you along.

MMO ATK’s Zac Pickle enjoyed Cloud Chamber, questioning, “Is it a video game? A movie? A work of art? … Can it be all those things?” He continued by calling Cloud Chamber quirky in it’s premise and presentation, yet “it’s fairly easy to become absolutely engrossed in the game and all it has to offer.” Solid acting and and a shockingly engrossing narrative pull the player in and compels them forward. While he found the game a little too self-indulgent in its break from traditional gameplay at times, he overall thought the experience was well worth his time. Gamers interested in a unique, player-driven mystery MMO game can find more information on Cloud Chamber’s main website or through Steam.

Jeklynn Heights

Jeklynn Heights

Jeklynn Heights is a multiplayer game that incorporates a multitude of genres and themes including 1st and 3rd person combat, RPG, strategy, and adventure. The game takes place entirely at night, a time when violence and peculiarity are at their peak. The town is separated into two sides, the Slums and the Square. The Slums are known for being the poor part of town, and the Square, for the rich. Each team starts out on the opposite side of the map. Both teams have several unique characters you can play as throughout the duration of the match. Each character has a different attack rotation, ranged weapon, and various special abilities.

Primary Objective
The goal of the game is to acquire the Orb of Egression located in the other team’s base. In order to capture the orb, the teams will need a portion of their overall players channeling it based on the team size. Successfully capturing the orb is your ticket out of this crazy town, but it comes with high risk.

Secondary Objective
Throughout each playable map there are structures called Sanity Posts and Ability Orbs. Capturing a Sanity Post will give the acquiring team a forward position and more sanity; a resource used to level up your character to gain special attacks. Capturing Ability Orbs will give the acquiring team a huge advantage by making various passive and active abilities accessible. Sanity Posts and Ability Orbs can be recaptured by the enemy team however, so it is crucial to defend them and brainstorm which ones would benefit your team.

Nether

Nether

Nether is a first-person survival MMO (MMOFPS) from Phosphor Game Studios and Nether Productions. Nether takes place in the middle of an urban, post-apocalyptic setting. The world is overrun with crumbling infrastructure, abandoned high-rise buildings and deserted camps. At the root of the problem is the infestation of the hostile and aggressive Nether creatures. These demonic creatures patrol what’s left of a previously thriving society and wreak havoc on anything that moves. Stranded and alone, the odds are against you as you scavenge and fight for your survival.

Set in a landscape loosely based off of Chicago, Nether creates a high-tension experience where players will have to make quick, yet calculated decisions to ensure their survival. Starting with nothing but a rusty machete and an extremely limited skill set, players will have to explore and scavenge to find food, medical resources and weapons to prolong their survival. Of course, despite being on your own, you are far from being alone in this survival MMOFPS. Teleporting Nether creatures and other human players pose a constant threat to those who get too careless in their behaviors. Both noise and movements are factors to account for in how stealthily you travel.

Nether features a variety of different Nether creature classes, each with unique stats and behavior specialties. Take, for example, the Shriekers. While generally weak on its own, the Shrieker will let out a piercing screech upon aggravation and summon all the Nether creatures in the surrounding area to your location. Shriekers should be considered extremely dangerous, as getting overwhelmed with enemies rarely ends well for the player. On the opposite end of the spectrum, you have the Golems. These giant brutes are feared for their massive damage potential and their significant stamina.

Generally better left unprovoked, killing Nether creatures provides the fastest track for leveling up your character. Completing missions and killing other human players will also add to your overall experience. Achieving new levels grants a skill point, which you can assign to various character traits to grant new skills and better attributes.

Much like in other survival MMOs such as DayZ or H1Z1, PvP plays a crucial role in gameplay. Whereas the PvE Nether enemies can be predictable, other human players you encounter in the world will beg for your empathy and trust. They can use cunning and deceit to win you over, just to stab you in the back when you least expect it. Playing with others can create a more enjoyable, rewarding experience, so who to trust? To help form a sense of alliance and civility, Nether offers five different Tribes to join. With your team you can conquer areas of the map and create strongholds. The game doesn’t prevent inter-Tribe murder, but it does frown upon it via player reputation.

The world of Nether consists of part urban city, spanning over 150 city blocks, and part rural outskirts. Up to 64 players can be hosted in each server, with multiple servers available to play in. The game currently follows a buy-to-play model in which you pay a one time price upfront and then are free to play without subscription. Feel like diving in? Royal Quest

Royal Quest

Royal Quest is a Fantasy MMO from Katauri Interactive and 1C Online Games Ltd. This game comes straight to you from the creators of the Space Rangers and King’s Bounty franchise. While the game recently launched in the US on August 6th of this year, it wouldn’t be fair to call this a “new” game per say. Actually, the game was originally released in Russia in 2012 and after two years, has finally made its way to American shores.

Royal quest is not a game that will blow your socks off with big budget production values nor is it a game that even attempts to distinguish itself from the 100s of other MMORPGs already released within this crowded genre, but what it does, it does well.

You start the game as you do in most MMORPGs – creating a character. There’s only one race available (humans), but you can pick your gender. There are 4 base classes to choose from at character creation – warriors, archers, mages, and rogues. While that may not sound like much, the four immediately available classes are only archtypes. At level 20, players can chose one of two available advanced classes.

Seldon Crisis

Seldon Crisis

Seldon Crisis is a completely player-driven MMO. The game’s economy, politics and even the infrastructure will be in the hands of the players who are not bound by preset paths and forced linear progression. Players can earn money and increase their character level by crafting and trading goods between the many sectors of the galaxy and its stations, hunting pirates and collecting loot and bounty, or fighting other players for their equipment and cargo.

In Seldon Crisis, players also will discover an extensive variety of missions, such as combat, escort, courier and exploration, with various combinations of each. Factions in each sector – hostile, friendly or neutral – offer work for adventurous captains while the vast depths of space offer hidden missions and uncharted territories to discover.

Seldon Crisis takes full advantage of an immense and beautiful galaxy where thousands of star systems, planets, moons, nebulas, wormholes and asteroid fields are waiting to be explored and exploited, with each sector of the universe offering a unique variety of resources and procedurally generated content.

AdventureQuest Worlds

AdventureQuest Worlds

AdventureQuest Worlds, or AQW for short, is a browser-based MMORPG from Artix Entertainment. AQW is one of the most popular fully featured browser MMORPGs on the market and regularly has thousands of players on at any one time. Adventure Quest Worlds was developed entirely in Adobe Flash and requires no micro-client to play, just head to the website and create a character!

Launched in late 2008, AdventureQuest Worlds has you choose between one of four starting classes: warrior, mage, healer, and rogue. You progress through the game by leveling up and adding stats to your character page. You can then make various abilities and better your attack powers, enhancements and classes. The game is filled with special events, raids, quests, loot, items, and gear.

You can play AdventureQuest Worlds absolutely free, however, a paid account can give you access to additional game content which you would normally not get to partake in. Micro-transactions are also prevalent in the game, and allow you to buy exclusive in-game items, and also real-life merchandise.

Once ready for battle, Dizzel features exciting unique game modes to unleash your onslaught of destruction, such as Annihilation, where the players take turns hunting down their foes as mechanized war machines. For the more traditional shooter fans, Dizzel comes equipped with a standard array of other game modes such as Team Deathmatch and Demolition as well. Dizzel will sate your thirst for lead-pumping action, no matter what type of shooter fan you are.

[heading]Dizzel’s Key Features[/heading]

  • Fatalities – Simply shooting your enemies to death is for newbs. Pull off brutal & stylish executions to finish off your enemies before their teammates can revive them.
  • Take Cover – Pop in and out from cover with guns blazing like you are in an old-school John Woo movie, or unleash a barrage of bullets at your enemies from the safety of being behind cover. Aiming is overrated anyway.

Unfortunately, Star86 closed its doors as of July 31st 2014 due to the low player base and the amount of money it cost the developers to run this online virtual world.  Some impressive stats during Star86’s time on this planet were over 650,000 registered players from over 120 countries.  Over 350,000 spaceships were created, with you (Dubbles) composing over 400,000 original songs!

Share your memories of Star86 in the comment section, maybe we can help bring the game back!
