[/review]The developers behind Wargame 1942 are the same ones that developed Desert Operations before it, so this new military simulation game has quite the lineage to follow up on. There has been much hype around Wargame 1942 even before its official release. In the game there are two powerful armies, you may have heard of them before, the Axis and the Allied. The entire globe is thrust into an unrelenting chaos and while the Axis are intent on destroying the land and everyone in it, the Allied aim to build a new world order.

In the game you are a legendary hero who is sent to restore peace in the country. You will select a site to build and train brave warriors. You will create strong alliances and gain the victory and glory that you have always hoped to achieve. Wargame 1942 will take perseverance, wisdom, faith and courage in order to command. Your main goal will be to build up a large amount of resources using both agricultural methods and mugging your opponent. You will want to build up many resources in order to do well later in the game.

Wargame 1942 features an eclectic mix of military action and units. You will command tanks, infantry, and aircraft to help you defeat the enemies from burning the land. All the while you will be defending your base from all sides in this exciting MMORTS game.

Castlot is a free to play MMORTS where players will choose to battle between the Bright Faction (led by none other than King Arthur) and the Dark Faction (Led by lord Blackmore). The game features intense real-time and turn based combat along with the ability to join forces with friends to take out enemy NPCs and players using traps, resources and spying.

One of the most important parts of Castlot is the ability to battle with or against other opponents in leagues. The leagues will keep track of stats and data and give you ranks which adds a pretty unique and exciting element to the game, rather than just random attacking of opponents in most MMORTS games. Another interesting attribute in Castlot is the Framing and Scheme system. With this system you are able to play tricks, sabotage and cripple other players resources which really adds an extra element of surprise before your full on attack.

Castlot offers an few unique elements to the traditional MMORTS that are well worth checking out. This free to play browser game is one that will be around for a long while and definitely deserves your attention.

Vindictus

Vindictus

Vindictus is a free-to-play fantasy MMORPG featuring fast-paced, hack and slash combat. Developed in Korea by devCAT, the game actually serves as a prequel to the popular MMORPG, Mabinogi. Though taking place in the same world, the events of Vindictus occur 700 years earlier.

Beginning the game, players select one character (from a main cast of six) to play as for the duration of the game: each with their own skills and advantages. Customizations to characters are purely aesthetic as abilities are predetermined. Additional items (apparel or stat modifiers) can be purchased through in-game shops located throughout the world for collected gold or via microtransactions.

Vindictus’ story follows an episodic structure (each episode having its own unique quests and locations) with new episodes being released every six months. Players receive gold, items and additional health points at the end of each episode which serves to greatly benefit players in those to follow.

Though teaming up with other players is certainly not required to complete the game, doing so is encouraged as it makes progress more achievable and the overall play experience more enjoyable. Enemies scale in difficulty as more players are added, though it should be noted that overall, added help increases the odds of completion.

Utilizing Valve’s Source Engine, Vindictus boasts crisp graphics and smooth gameplay. Environments are destructible and can be utilized as player weapons. This advantage adds variety and helps to keep gameplay fresh. Those looking for fast-paced, action-oriented gameplay should look no further.

DDTank

DDTank is an MMO shooter game that is very similar to the Worms games. You are placed on a map with up to 4 players and will battle it out in turn based action. The game is playable right on your browser so there is no need to download anything, just sign up and play.

The gameplay is quite easy to get the hang of, but takes some time to master. There is a great deal of strategy involved in becoming a master at the game which makes for some very fun strategizing while learning to get the hang of it. Multiple game modes and tons of weapons make DDTank a very enjoyable casual style game. Matches can be completed fairly quickly so there’s no need to schedule a ton of time to get in some fun MMO shooter action.

In addition to the PvP element you are also given various tasks throughout the game which adds a slight RPG flavor to it.

Dust 514 is doing something revolutionary. While the free to play shooter market is certainly not unheard of on the PC, with games like Blacklight Retribution, PlanetSide 2 and Tribes being a dominating force, the F2P MMOFPS is hardly a common place on consoles. This free to play giant is looking to take on the console space by storm on the PS3 and if the beta is anything to go by, they have a really good start.

The game takes place inside the universe of Eve Online. This mechanic alone is an interesting one that should bring in a bunch of players. Players of Eve can put out contracts and support the battle field on PC while the soldiers of Dust 514 do their dirty work. Players pick a faction from the Eve Online universe and then become the soldiers of fortune. Once players pick a faction the real fun begins.

Fighting over resources, different factions are encouraged to take over bases so that their Eve Online counterparts can reap the benefits. Player can use different dropsuits that act as the different classes for the game. The dropsuits include an assault class, a scout class, a heavy class and a support logistics class. There also is a few vehicle sets that some players can specialize in to support ground troops. The massive scale of battle and vehicle play are similar to something you would see in PlanetSide 2, and that is a good thing. Players of Dust 514 are in for a real treat when this game goes live.

The large scale battles, the different classes and the connectivity with Eve Online make Dust 514 a special game. Check out the link above to learn more about Dust 514 including how to get yourself in the beta testing. This game is going to make some waves in how the console and PC markets both operate in the future. Be a part of this historic game today!

Otherland is a Sci Fi fantasy RPG that delivers powerful graphics. Wrapped in the Unreal Engine 3, Otherland delivers a large scale environment that wows. Living in this world is fully realized and has a strong back story from the book it is based on by Tod Williams. This is no MMO that is satisfied with one type of environment. The different areas span all different types of spaces that span a steam punk world all the way to medieval castles.

The game not only looks beautiful but plays like a dream as well. There are four different classes, the Marksman, the Warrior, the Assassin and the Energizer. Each have a specific toolset for taking care of enemies and also working together against enemies in PvE. Any class can use any weapon allowing for players to switch roles on the playfield. There also is a heavy switching of weapons mechanic that spices up battle nicely. All and all, Otherland makes every battle type completely customizable.

Customization extends much further than just play style though. Characters themselves can be changed heavily in appearance be it body type and clothing. Almost any piece of clothing can be worn by any class or character type. In Otherland you can really make your character feel like it is your perfect avatar.

Otherland?s vast sprawling environments, class systems and customization make it a perfect game for the MMORPG fan. Check out the link above to dive into the world of Otherland. A Sci Fi fantastical world awaits!

End of Nations is a MMORTS game in a time when it is hard to find a great RTS title. The game’s story starts with a totalitarian regime taking over the world after a major crash of the world?s economy. Build armies with your friends, or against your friends in this free to play title made by Petroglyph Games.

The place where End of Nations really shines is it?s MMO side. There are a lot of different scaled battles, that include up to 28 vs 28 player matches and get as intimate as 1v1 heart pounding standoffs. The large scale matches with 56 different armies battling against one another is confusing and yet somehow satisfying once you understand the battlefield. With multiple different kinds of troops, End of Nations is a controlled chaos that will fascinates any RTS fan.

There are also a ton of different kinds of play modes. These modes include a different PvP battles like Base Domination, Base Assault, Domination and Last Man Standing that are full of strategic madness. There is also a few modes that are co-op though. These game modes, Campaign and Survival, have teams of four players grouping up and holding their bases against full frontal assaults by large tank like enemies. Working together is the only way to do these missions successfully and any weak link will punish the whole team in a significant way.

It?s good to see a real attempt at a MMORTS that isn’t based around paying to play. There are certain elements that remind you that End of Nations is a free 2 play game, but the experience is enjoyable. If you love large scale battles, or just love RTS games in general, take a peek at End of Nations today.

DayZ, a free mod for Arma 2 developed by Dean Hall aka Rocket and published by Bohemia Interactive, is a realistic post apocalyptic survival MMO simulator. The game received quite a large following from the spread of word of mouth from fans. The game knows how to portray the problems in our society by making players interact in a real way. It is not uncommon to see players yelling at each other in the chat, arguing over who is friendly or not.

Although zombies are populated all over the map, they are not the real danger. You work against the elements like a real person. Managing your hunger and health while at the same time managing your sanity against other people doesn?t sound like fun, but somehow is. Jumping off an incline or falling down a ledge are all serious obstacles as you could break your leg and render yourself useless. The feeling of alone and helplessness makes this game something truly special.

Another thing that makes DayZ interacts with people is the scarcity of items. Players will have to scrounge around for anything they can find. Cans of coke become like gold when the player desperately needs something to quench their thirst. After digging into the game though, you start to realize that the world is much more fleshed out than it appears. Players can scrounge together parts for vehicles like cars, trucks, helicopters and others to dominate a DayZ map. That is, if you survive grabbing these pieces.

DayZ is still a free mod for Arma 2. However, there will be a standalone title that will be available soon. This game is a blast to play with some friends or by yourself and is a must play for the zombie fan. Drop into the game today with the link above and test out your survivability.

Starlight Story

There is an ever present war going on between magic and technology and players will need to harness their powers from both sides to survive.

Starlight Story offers a wealth of play options from PvE to PvP and everything in between. There is a strong sense of togetherness as you work together with other players to take on a variety of dungeons and world bosses. There are a number of deep MMORPG gameplay elements that are not usually found within the browser based format.

Customization plays a huge role in the game as you can change many aspects about your character. Not only can you change your look but you will be able to change your characters abilities, stats and pets throughout your time with the game.

EVE Online explores a distant future in which a surge in population forces humanity to explore the galaxy in order to find resources that have become scarce on Earth. While on their search, the humans stumble upon a wormhole that leads them to the distant New Eden galaxy. With the promise of abundant resources, colonies begin to settle the new worlds only to find themselves stranded after a sudden wormhole collapse. Without contact from Earth, the colonies are left, isolated, even from one another. As time passes, five major civilizations rise to form the factions of EVE Online.

EVE Online is a sandbox MMORPG in which players are allowed to explore a universe filled with planets, asteroids, ships, wormholes, and more. With thousands of different star systems to explore and hundreds of thousands of other players to encounter, there are limitless things to do in New Eden — a game world that is completely player driven. What makes EVE so unique is that every player plays on the same server, meaning that CCP Games can craft the story around actual game events and have it be relevant to everyone playing. Best of all, when the game gets over crowded, new content can be added to accommodate the larger numbers.

Players choose between four different races for each of their (up to three) characters. Customization extends further by defining bloodline and customizing appearance features. Progression is not achieved through defeating enemies, but rather through a training process that can occur whether the player is online or not. This unique approach to advancement allows players to enhance the abilities they prefer, as they see fit.

Battles can occur between both other players and NPCs. Players do not control their ships manually, but rather they give commands and watch the battle play out in real time. Weaponry is controlled in much the same way and the damage done is a resulting culmination of factors such as range, velocity, and weaponry used.

Because of the open-world sandbox format of the game, many actions that would be considered griefing in other MMOs are allowed in EVE Online. Such actions include stealing, extorting, and causing opponent death via large groups of NPCs. CCP Games has stated that they have no intention to moderate such actions as the added free will simply adds to the experience.

EVE Online is one of the most exciting and expansive Sci-Fi Space MMORPG experiences on the market today. Despite its current subscription based monetization model, the game offers enough enthralling and captivating content to justify the commitment.

Path of Exile

Path of Exile feels like what Diablo III should have been. That’s what I’d heard people saying, anyway.

For my part, I wasn’t entirely certain whether or not to take them at their word, after all, the Internet has a wonderful way of running away with even the smallest shred of hype. After spending a bit of time with the game, though?

It?s true. Every damned word is true. Path of Exile may well be the closest thing to perfect the genre has achieved since Diablo II, and it honestly blows Blizzard’s efforts (which feel clumsy and uninspired by comparison) clear out of the water. That’s right, I said it: Grinding Gear Games has done a better job of creating Diablo than the game’s original designer.

Factor in that the MMO effectively represents the pinnacle of the free-to-play business model and it’s even more impressive.

Path of Exile, as the name implies, puts you into the shoes of one of seven different characters who’ve been exiled to the hostile, ancient land of Wraeclast. Each of these characters represents one of the game’s classes; each class is tied to one or two out of three attributes (Strength, Dexterity, and Intelligence, naturally). This is where it makes its first, most impressive divergence from the typical dungeon-crawler formula.

See, in Path of Exile, there is only one talent tree, and each character starts at a different area on that tree based on their primary attributes. The Witch and the Templar, for example, share one track that increases their mana regeneration, while the Duelist and Warrior share a Strength track. What’s more, these talents don’t actually give your character new spells or abilities.

Those are gained through gems you’ll receive as quest rewards and find scattered throughout the world of Wraeclast. As near as I can tell, these gems are class-agnostic (though what class you’re playing will have an impact on what gems you find earlier in the game). Socketing one of these magical stones into your weapons or armor will grant you access to a new spell or ability. As you level up, these stones and the abilities they contain will level up alongside you, gaining experience as they’re used in combat. Each of these stones is tied to one of the three attributes, which does limit somewhat which stones your character can actually use. If you’re using a fireball stone as a warrior, you’re not going to be able to level it up all that much before reaching the limitations of your abilities.

That said, the way Path of Exile manages talents and classes provides an unprecedented level of freedom, allowing players to build their character however they see fit, with only passing consideration given to their starting class. It’s an incredibly unique way of doing things, and it makes the game all the more addictive.

Another strange deviation from the traditional dungeon crawler is the absence of gold. Near as I can tell, all of Wraeclast works on a barter system. Trinkets such as scrolls of Wisdom (basically, Identify scrolls), Portal Scrolls, and Whetstones can be traded for items and equipment; loot you pick up in your travels can likewise be traded for scrolls and other small items. It’s a big of an odd system, and  one which does admittedly take some getting used to.

Now, as for the multiplayer component; Path of Exile can be played as a single-player experience, a multi-player affair, or an MMO. The folks over at Grinding Gear Games have accomplished this balance through the implementation of several different Leagues (and the ability to recruit people to join your party using notice-boards in the game’s settlements).  These leagues add a new angle of competition to the game, allowing players to vie against one another for a spot on the leader-boards. Players can even pay Grinding Gear Games to create their own leagues, with their own unique set of rules. A few example leagues include Iron Man (where players cannot trade with vendors, regenerate mana, or refill their flasks in town), Hardcore (permanent death), and Cut-Throat (permanent death and open-world PVP). Players and characters can move between leagues and will, and dying in a Hardcore league, for example, will only shunt the player and their character back to a standard one.  It’s a very interesting mechanic, and one I haven’t quite gotten to test as much as I’d like.

Anyway, I think I’ve nattered on enough. At this point, one thing should be clear: Path of Exile is an awesome game, and if you’ve not yet played it, you need to do so right now!
