Reality Squared Games today announced
their new MMORPG League of Angels is officially out of beta.  The beta
peroids proved successful, attracting over 200,000 registered players, many of
which played through both phases.  The developers revealed the addition of
two new Angels, Amora, and Nyssa, along with several new features including the
marriage system, and ranking tables for competitive play.

NCSoft recently published its 4th
Quarter financial reports, showing that Guild Wars 2 lead the way to a
successful year for the company.  Most of NCSoft’s recent titles had a
successful 2013, with Lineage showing tremendous growth, and Guild Wars 2
raking in over $115 million dollars.  Among the other highlights of the
report, Blade and Soul’s chinese release saw a huge surge in Royalties, while
the company looks forward to the Wildstar launch later this year.

Lastly, the fine folks over at MMO Champion
have found some leaks to the Heroes of the Storm Alpha client.  They dug
up info that reveals images of a log-in screen, options menus, loading screens,
instruction pages, and unreleased Heroes with descriptions and stats.
Head on over to MMO Champion to get the low-down on that info!

Hearthstone

Hearthstone

So…I kind of regret downloading Hearthstone. No, not because there are any inherent problems with the quality of the game. Quite the contrary, actually – it’s probably one of the most solid card games I’ve played in years, mechanics-wise. Everything from the music to the graphics to the voice acting is impeccably done, and the freemium elements of the title – while they do smack very faintly of pay-to-win – are implemented well enough that they don’t particularly impede one’s enjoyment.

The way the game works is deceptively simple. In Hearthstone, there are two ‘types’ of cards – Neutral and Class. Neutral Cards – which feature various recognizable creatures pulled straight from World of Warcraft, referred to as “minions” – can be used in most any deck, but don’t include any spells within their ranks. Presumably, these represent the myriad monsters and NPCs you’d encounter in the MMORPG itself. Class Cards, meanwhile, are meant to represent a particular classes skills and abilities. While they tend to include a few minions, they’re primarily comprised of spells and equipment. Each deck may only choose Class cards from one particular Class – for example, you wouldn’t be able to include the Warlock’s class cards in a Priest deck.

Each class -represented by a familiar face from Warcraft canon, from Uther Lightbringer(Paladin) to Jaina Proudmoore(Mage) to Rexxar(Hunter) – furthermore has its own special ability, costing only two mana. This adds a unique bit of flavor to the game, and can actually form the crux of a deck’s entire strategy. For example, a common tactic with the Mage is to use Enrage minions (which get bigger when they take damage) and hit them with her one damage Firebolt spell to pump them up on the turn they’re summoned, while a priest might decide to steal those minions for himself, healing them with his ability.

Like I said…deceptively simple.

On first booting up Hearthstone, you’ll be walked through a short series of tutorial battles which will walk you through the basics (and introduce you to the game’s peculiar sense of humor). Playing as Jaina Proudmoore – the hero used to represent the Mage, the first class to which players have access – you’ll fight through a series of amusing foes, from the vicious Hogger straight up to Illidan Stormrage himself. Afterwards, the game effectively turns you loose, equipping you with a single booster pack, a selection of Neutral creatures, and the Mage class. If you’d like, you can stick with the Mage, or defeat the AI to unlock any of the game’s other classes. Play games, and you’ll level up your class, unlocking more Class Cards for them and enabling you to improve your deck.

That actually leads me to one of the biggest problems with Hearthstone – indeed, a problem shared by many games of its ilk. Due both to the leveling system and Hearthstone’s mirotransactions, there’s actually a bit of a barrier to entry for new players. Until you’ve accumulated a few booster packs, your deck’s probably going to feel a touch ineffective. That’s because many of the most powerful cards are unlocked not through leveling up, but as random drops in booster packs. These packs are bought with Gold, which can either be gained through completing “Quests” (for example, win 3 games as a Mage) or with real-world money.

That’s a minor gripe, at best. Even though it’s only in beta, Hearthstone is already incredibly addicting – and extremely promising. One thing is certain: Blizzard definitely knows how to do free to play.

Transcript:
The Hearthstone US Open Beta begins today as one of the most
highly sought after closed beta events in history comes to an end.  How can I make this claim?  Well, the over $134,000 made from selling
Hearthstone closed beta keys on eBay helps.
So yes, beginning today, anyone in the US can sign up for and play highly
anticipated trading card game from Blizzard.
A warning has been issued because of the anticipated influx of new players.  It is also helpful to note that there will be
no more wipes, so players are free to amass as many new cards as possibly,
without fear of losing them.  Have fun!

The latest champion to join Infinite Crisis is coming, and
it’s none other than Superman.  Now, I can’t’
be the only one surprised that Superman wasn’t in the original starting
line-up, but I guess they had to make you anticipate something.  In Infinite Crisis Superman will excel at
initiating and finishing team fights.
His skills include him spitting ice into your eyes to slow you down, and
shooting lasers from your eyes to deal damage and knock the enemy back.  These are two skills that I had no idea
Superman had, but of course, he is Superman so, anything is possible.

The next big patch for Age of Wushu is due out next month
and Snail Games has released a small preview on their site to get players
excited about the new update.  So what
should we expect?  Well, the new Dragon
and Tiger Tournament will feature a series of one-on-one duels, with the
winners receive manuals, skills and pills.
There’s also the fourth internal skill unlock, which should give you
more edge in battle, and additional school lessons.  I’m sure there’s more, but the teaser only
gave us so much!

Transcript:
Following the latest update to Blizzard’s Hearthstone, lead
designer Eric Dodds took to the official website to explain how they are
tackling card balancing.  Balance is
incredibly important in the world of MMOs, but especially in the trading card
genre, as the cards represent 100% of in-game mechanics.  Of the most interesting points in the post
are the nerfing of the one turn kill cards, changing of the mana rules and
slight changes to cards that many considered overpowered.

Mounted combat is finally upon us in SOE’s Dragon’s
Prophet.  The latest trailer shows off
just how mounted combat works, and shows incredible action shots of both on
ground and in-air combat.  Now, mounted
combat in MMOs is not a new thing,  you
can find it in Lord of the Rings Online, but it’s definitely a step in the
right direction in immersion for a game that’s all about your dragon.  Additional updates in Dragon’s Prophet
include a new legendary dungeon, new bosses and more!

The latest edition of The Old Republic Insider offers a
behind the scenes look at the latest Galactic Starfighter update, the Kuat
Drive Yard Flashpoint Missions, as well as the next round of Cartel Market
Items coming to Star Wars the Old Republic.
The video also teases a new event as well as some upcoming content
updates coming to the game.  Check out
