Critical Thinking: On Branching Narrative

Last time, I mused a bit on the concept of linearity versus openness in gaming. Today, I’d like to continue that line of thought, with a look at narrative paths in game design. See, I was reading an article the other day – an interview with TellTale Games – where it was revealed that they almost cut Clementine from The Walking Dead. If you’re among those who’ve played the game, I’m sure you’ll agree that it would have been a catastrophic choice which would have resulted in one of the best features of the game – one of the game’s sole driving factors – being absent.

Today’s piece is all about meaning.

[/review]GunDog is a team-based third person shooter game that also draws in some elements from collectible card games. In the game you can play as a Rifleman, Medic, Sniper and more as you collect unique characters with some incredible game-changing skills.

GunDog does not hide its sense of goofiness and humor, for one, because it’s dogs fighting in a World War type setting, and two, because of the distinct cell-shaded comic book style graphics. What’s great about GunDog is that you can switch classes on the fly and that there are a variety of different characters to play and collect through the trading card aspect.

Some key features of the game include the collectible card system, many different classes, unique skills, tournaments and leader-boards and its art style.

ChronoBlade

ChronoBlade is a browser based hack and slash side-scroller that’s hosted on Facebook. The game mainly relies on button smashing and killing. The game comes from nWay Games and is their first foray into the genre. Many of the great people working on the game come from some pretty incredible backgrounds in games like Dead Space and Diablo II.

ChronoBlade involves building your character through a skill tree which grands you additional passive and active skills. Currently there are 2 different characters, Aurok, who is more of a bersker type character that uses his hands as weapons, and Lophi, who is more of a DPS character that relies heavily on combos to kill. The game is in beta at the moment and interested players can sign up using the Play Now button above.

The most interesting part of Ecol Tactics Online is the mercenary system. Your mercenaries are hired and trained while fighting alongside you. Your mercenaries level up with you as you progress through the game while invading armies of monsters wreak havoc on the kingdom and its queen. The game features great ‘old school’ pixel art throughout the game with a pretty in-depth character creation system. In Ecol Tactics you will also hone your skills in crafting, upgrading equipment, personalizing costumes and more!
