Heroes and Generals

Heroes and Generals

Heroes and Generals is a free to play MMO First Person Shooter with a strategic multiplayer campaign that takes place during World War II. In the game players choose between fighting as the Heroes, which pits you into the trenches and the battlefields, or as a General which has you managing the battlefield and the units from afar.

The game can be accessed continuously using a cross-platform approach. Windows, iOS and Android devices support the game, which results in continuous action across the battlefield. Each conflict takes place through contested cities, factories and airfields on a strategic map.

The main component of the game is the First Person Shooter element, where players are put straight into the battlefield where you can use a variety of character, weapons and vehicles to take out the enemy. When you’re unable to use your PC for the FPS element, you can download the app, Heroes and Generals: Mobile Command, and use the strategic element to command players or entire groups into combat, while managing resources and securing key locations on the map.

Hearthstone

Hearthstone

So…I kind of regret downloading Hearthstone. No, not because there are any inherent problems with the quality of the game. Quite the contrary, actually – it’s probably one of the most solid card games I’ve played in years, mechanics-wise. Everything from the music to the graphics to the voice acting is impeccably done, and the freemium elements of the title – while they do smack very faintly of pay-to-win – are implemented well enough that they don’t particularly impede one’s enjoyment.

The way the game works is deceptively simple. In Hearthstone, there are two ‘types’ of cards – Neutral and Class. Neutral Cards – which feature various recognizable creatures pulled straight from World of Warcraft, referred to as “minions” – can be used in most any deck, but don’t include any spells within their ranks. Presumably, these represent the myriad monsters and NPCs you’d encounter in the MMORPG itself. Class Cards, meanwhile, are meant to represent a particular classes skills and abilities. While they tend to include a few minions, they’re primarily comprised of spells and equipment. Each deck may only choose Class cards from one particular Class – for example, you wouldn’t be able to include the Warlock’s class cards in a Priest deck.

Each class -represented by a familiar face from Warcraft canon, from Uther Lightbringer(Paladin) to Jaina Proudmoore(Mage) to Rexxar(Hunter) – furthermore has its own special ability, costing only two mana. This adds a unique bit of flavor to the game, and can actually form the crux of a deck’s entire strategy. For example, a common tactic with the Mage is to use Enrage minions (which get bigger when they take damage) and hit them with her one damage Firebolt spell to pump them up on the turn they’re summoned, while a priest might decide to steal those minions for himself, healing them with his ability.

Like I said…deceptively simple.

On first booting up Hearthstone, you’ll be walked through a short series of tutorial battles which will walk you through the basics (and introduce you to the game’s peculiar sense of humor). Playing as Jaina Proudmoore – the hero used to represent the Mage, the first class to which players have access – you’ll fight through a series of amusing foes, from the vicious Hogger straight up to Illidan Stormrage himself. Afterwards, the game effectively turns you loose, equipping you with a single booster pack, a selection of Neutral creatures, and the Mage class. If you’d like, you can stick with the Mage, or defeat the AI to unlock any of the game’s other classes. Play games, and you’ll level up your class, unlocking more Class Cards for them and enabling you to improve your deck.

That actually leads me to one of the biggest problems with Hearthstone – indeed, a problem shared by many games of its ilk. Due both to the leveling system and Hearthstone’s mirotransactions, there’s actually a bit of a barrier to entry for new players. Until you’ve accumulated a few booster packs, your deck’s probably going to feel a touch ineffective. That’s because many of the most powerful cards are unlocked not through leveling up, but as random drops in booster packs. These packs are bought with Gold, which can either be gained through completing “Quests” (for example, win 3 games as a Mage) or with real-world money.

That’s a minor gripe, at best. Even though it’s only in beta, Hearthstone is already incredibly addicting – and extremely promising. One thing is certain: Blizzard definitely knows how to do free to play.

H1Z1: Just Survive

H1Z1

H1Z1: Just Survive is a post-apocalyptic zombie survival MMO from Daybreak Games Co. The game is set fifteen years after an initial horrifying outbreak of the virus where players must survive against the infected, wild animals, and other survivors. The game was first announced by then SOE’s president John Smedley in early April of 2014. Heading to both the PC and Playstation 4 in late 2014, the game will soon be coming to Steam via Early Access.

H1Z1 is set in SOE’s own version of the United States, think Middle-America. The world has been overtaken by this epidemic and players will fight to survive. The game will offer a sandbox style of gameplay with a character progressions system, crafting, building and scavenging. The world will have all the tools you need to survive, and the use of the Forelight engine will allow players to interact with the world in a way that feels natural to what life may be like in such a situation. You can take the role of a farmer, creating food for your friends, or a gun-toting killing machine whose sold reason to live is to kill anything that walks.

GunZ 2: The Second Duel

GunZ 2

When I was younger (and perhaps more foolish) I managed to draw a great deal of enjoyment from a rather strange little game called GunZ: The Duel. This third-person platformer was all about quick fingers, melee, and parkour – I was hooked. You can imagine my excitement then, when I realized that there’s a sequel, currently in open beta on Steam. Does it live up to the legacy of the original?

Well…yes and no.

Full disclosure here: I’m kind of awful at this game. I’m not entirely certain why, or what it is about it, but…I can’t play to save my life. Keep that in mind as you read this review (though I’m not going to be commenting much on game balance – everything seems to be in order there).

One thing I’m going to say before moving on is that purist fans of the original should probably avoid GunZ 2. They have, unfortunately, gotten rid of K-Styling (they’re using a new engine, without the easily-exploitable flaws of the original). What that means is that you’re going to have to rely more on your standard outfit of moves. Unfortunately, while you’ve still got a pretty varied set of moves, the mechanics feel like they’ve been gutted somewhat, as well. Although you’re going to be moving with a fair bit of agility, GunZ 2 feels somewhat slower than its predecessor, with much less parkour than the original. What’s more, Although each of the four classes is somewhat unique in the gear available to them, melee ultimately feels the same whether you’re a Gunslinger or a Shield Trooper.

Oh, yeah. Forgot to mention: remember the awesome freedom you were afforded in GunZ? How you could design your character however you wanted, giving them whatever guns and cosmetic gear you saw fit? Yeah, say goodbye to that in the sequel, where the developers have inexplicably decided to switch over to a class system. At creation, you’re going to need to select one of the four different characters; the others will remain locked to you until you shell out either real money or a hefty sum of in-game cash.

That’s strike one against GunZ 2, and a significant one, at that.

There’s also a severely limited range of cosmetic items available for your character compared against the previous game – though admittedly, this may be due to GunZ 2 still being in beta. I’ll give it a pass on this, as the team behind it could well release more stuff as the game moves past its beta stage. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that they don’t make it pay to win, though certain elements (like the respawn coins, which let you revive your character in the single-player missions and cost $2.95 a pop) don’t really bode well, nor does the somewhat exorbitant price of most of the stuff in the shop.

Ultimately, I don’t dislike GunZ 2…but I don’t like it all that much, either. It’s sort of…bland and soulless, in spite of how good it looks and sounds. That’s a shame, given how fun the original was (though admittedly, I might be looking at it through rose-colored glasses). Ah, well. Back to Loadout. That game’s giving me more entertainment than this one possibly could.

[/review]GunDog is a team-based third person shooter game that also draws in some elements from collectible card games. In the game you can play as a Rifleman, Medic, Sniper and more as you collect unique characters with some incredible game-changing skills.

GunDog does not hide its sense of goofiness and humor, for one, because it’s dogs fighting in a World War type setting, and two, because of the distinct cell-shaded comic book style graphics. What’s great about GunDog is that you can switch classes on the fly and that there are a variety of different characters to play and collect through the trading card aspect.

Some key features of the game include the collectible card system, many different classes, unique skills, tournaments and leader-boards and its art style.

Guild Wars 2

Guild Wars 2 is the long awaited sequel to the original Guild Wars from ArenaNet. The original Guild Wars wowed players by being one of the only non-subscription MMO?s during the high peak time of World of Warcraft. Guild Wars 2 builds on ArenaNet?s thinking outside the normal MMO box by offering features most titles could only dream about.

The lands of Tyria are being run over by dragons which have plagued the continent. Your job as a player is to pick between 5 different races and 8 different professions to create the perfect hero. Each race has a different starting area with tons of quests to partake in. After completing quests in the races homeland players can then go to other areas and partake in a vast amount of quests because of the interesting level system that is in place. Whether you are level 5 or 80 the engine finds a way to keep all areas interesting for all players.

The idea, for ArenaNet, is to bring players together. The sprawling landscapes of Tyria are covered in group events that anyone can take part in. These events can be jaw dropping for first time players that see a giant enemy patrolling the landscape and require everyone in the area to work together to bring them down.

After tackling the storyline of Guild Wars 2 there is an extensive amount of competitive play to move on to. Two different modes, Player vs. Player and World vs World, offer different tiers of loot, gear and weapons for players to work towards. There is literally hundreds of hours of content between the different competitive modes and story gameplay.

Guild Wars 2 is a different kind of MMO. It takes everything that you know and throws it out of the window. Battle mechanics change with different professions and different weapons. The wide sprawling world events are breathtaking and encourage player interaction. Everything about this game makes players want to find the next epic battle in the lands of Tyria.

Grimoire

Grimoire Game Feature

Grimoire is a PC multiplayer shooter where wizards battle in a dark medieval fantasy world for prestige and power using unique and powerful spells. Though inspired by many popular FPS games, Grimoire is a significant departure from the norm, including everything from devastating “ultimate” attacks to specialized class-based passive skills to customizable classes.

We aim to combine the best of FPS with the unique classes and abilities found in MOBA games into fun and engaging wizard combat that rewards precise aim as well as strategic skills and teamwork. Grand Fantasia

Grand Fantasia

Grand Fantasia is a brightly themed 3D Fantasy MMORPG with anime-inspired graphics. The game is also called Dreamy Journey Online in other parts of the world. With a gorgeously designed game world and fluid gameplay, Grand Fantasia is well worth checking out.

Grand Fantasia is a 3D Fantasy MMORPG developed by EASYFUN Entertainment, the same folks who made HolyBeast Online.Perhaps the most unique aspect of the game is its detailed ?Sprite? pet system. Fans of cute anime inspired games like Luna Online and Fiesta Online should certainly be able to find something to like in Grand Fantasia ? but even though the game has fluid gameplay and attractive graphics, it does little to push the genre forward.

Even though the game doesn?t exactly revolutionize the genre, Grand Fantasia is still a high quality free MMO that?s well worth checking out. Players start off their journey in Grand Fantasia as a classless novice and can chose their first class at level 5.

Granado Espada is a 3D Fantasy MMORPG that mixes many of the traditional MMORPG elements along with a RTS themed movement and micro-management system that makes it a very unique gameplay experience. The game was previously called Sword 2 and Sword of the New World.

Granado Espada is developed by IMC Games Co. and being published in North America by T3Fun. The storyline leverages the 17th century and the age of exploration in Europe. This will be the backdrop in which explorers will embark on their conquest of the New World.

The game features a multi-character control system that adds a unique layer of depth and challenge which is not seen before in an MMO. You will be able to control up to 3 characters simultaneously which offers an innovative play style and also makes strategy all that much more important. There are several player class archetypes and tons of new maps, missions and armor to be found and explored.

Players that are migrating from Sword 2 will be able to continue on with their existing characters, as well as receive a special loyalty gift as a welcome prize for the new game.

Goodgame Empire

Goodgame Empire

In Goodgame Empire, players get to experience life as lord of a land. Go from building your small castle to the capital of an empire! Set up and operate a thriving economic state, and build your military forces to defend your holdings, and expand your borders. Join with other players and destroy any opposition, to become the ruler of a legacy!

Goodgame Empire is a browser base castle building game where you build things in real-time.  Graphics are cartoony and easy on the eyes.  The interface may be a little clunky, but most of the basic stuff is easy and intuitive to use.  The main objectives of the game is to accumulate resources such as wood, stone and food over time and then spend this building stuff and feeding your population and army.  There is some limited functionality for sending resources to others and therefore trading.  Goodgame Studios have also recently introduced outposts, which are like mini castles you can capture and build up from scratch.

In the game you receive quests, which are the only way to get experience, and they direct you to build certain building.  Gaining experience means gaining levels.  Gaining levels means more types of building and better soldiers to recruit.  Besides building stuff you also recruit armies and build siege equipment.  This means you can make use of this for attacking other players.  The combat itself is automatically resolved, but the setup and combat reports are complex enough to be interesting without being daunting.  Beating up other players gives you honor which will increase your ranking in the game as you gain more of it.

If you are in to City Building games give this one a try, you will not be sorry.
