[/review]I’ve always regretted that I never really got the chance to experience any of the truly old-school MMORPGs. Back when those games were in their prime, I was strictly a console gamer: the first title I ever played was Megaman 5. When I first heard about Tibia, I decided I might as well give it a try. I mean, I’m only sixteen years late, right? How much could have changed?

Hoo, boy. I had no idea what I was in for.

The first thing I noticed – and the first thing most of you are likely to notice – about Tibia is that it’s graphically simplistic, with an interface that’s more than a little clunky. It features no audio whatsoever, with attack animations that are unimpressive, at best. It is, quite literally, a callback to a simpler time.

With that in mind, it should immediately be clear that Tibia’s most definitely not a game for everyone. If you’re in the mood for a more hardcore experience, you should likely stop reading here. Tibia most assuredly isn’t for you. Best to move on to a more modern title.

If, however, you’re aiming for a more nostalgic experience, Tibia’s most definitely got what you’re looking for.

Upon first logging in, you’ll be greeted by a series of tutorial quests that’ll teach you the ropes of the game, introducing you to the world in the process. There’s a lot to learn, so you’re going to be here for a while: until level eight, actually. Once you’ve reached that point, you’ll be given the choice between one of four different vocations – Druid, Sorcerer, Knight, and Paladin. Sorcerers are masters of aggressive magic, while druids focus on healing and defense. Meanwhile, Knights are melee specialists, while paladins focus on a combination of distance combat and magic.

Not surprisingly, the spell-casting classes tend to be far more complex, with a focus on producing magical effects through either runes or latin chants. The Berserk spell, for example, is evoked by typing in exori, while Brutal Strike requires the invocation exori ico. It’s a very interesting touch, and I love the level of flexibility that it adds to the game’s magic system. That said, it makes playing a spellcaster considerably more complex than a more physically-oriented class. Combined with the more vulnerable nature of magic-oriented characters, I’d encourage newer players to stick with Knight, or maybe Paladin.

Once you’ve selected a class, you’re pretty much turned loose on the world. True to form, Tibia offers very little guidance to players: exploration is the best way to discover the world around you, though it’s quite easy to blunder into an area where you’ve no business being. That’s part of the fun though, right?

Also of note is the way players interact with NPCs. Instead of just skimming through quest dialogue, players are encouraged to use keywords to interact. This adds a new layer to the game beyond simply clicking through the motions, though it can get a touch tedious.

The free-to-play elements are quite skillfully implemented, as well. For a small subscription fee, you can upgrade your account to Premium, giving you access to new areas of the world, new items, and access to player housing which can be visited by other players and customized as you see fit. It’s a nice cap on the experience – on a more personal note, it’s also refreshing to see a game that actually does free to play right after reviewing so many that do it wrong.

Now, given the game’s age, it definitely isn’t without its faults. As I’ve already said, the interface tends to feel sluggish and clunky, while characters move at a painstaking pace across the map. Basically…it hasn’t really aged all that well.

Of course, whether or not that’s a problem ultimately depends on your personal taste. While some people might find Tibia to be slow, difficult, and thoroughly frustrating, others will appreciate going back to a time before World of Warcraft was even a glimmer in its developer’s eyes. Either way, I’d recommend giving it a try – you might find yourself pleasantly surprised at the results.

The West

The West

The West, developed and published by InnoGames, is a 2D browser-based game with a unique setting. The game places the player into the Wild West with no cash or skills. A tutorial slowly teaches beginners how to duel, pick tobacco and navigate through the game. There is no character customization, but the player receives skill points to upgrade their avatar.

Each character has 4 stats to raise, 20 skills, and at level 10 players get to choose one of the four classes that each have 4 archetypes:Adventurer ? with the archetypes: Trapper, Wanderer, Indian, Prospector.  Dueler ? with Bounty Hunter, Gunslinger, Bandit, and Hangdog.  Worker ? Cowboy, Quaker, Craftsman, and Mortician.  Soldier ? Cavalryman, Mexican, Mercenary, Iroquois

Besides questing, players are able to duel each other. An interesting feature of the game is the possibility of founding and running a city. Unfortunately casual players will find it difficult to keep track and win against premium players. There are considerable bonuses coming with a premium package, 50% for some abilities such as: energy regeneration, wage increase, chance of finding items.

The West has detailed and complex stat distribution, a good number of classes to choose from, a unique battle system, enough to keep players interested and entertained.

The SKIES

SKIES MMORPG The SKIES

This game is not really a MMORPG in the proper sense of the word. In our innovative project story line isn’t linear, it’s up to a player to create own game reality and decide on proper role in it, which makes our game open both to social players and to single ones. The main rule is pretty simple: each action leads to changes in different spheres of the game world: characters’ relations, events, etc. While a player is deeply immersed in the game world and is trying to find his/her place there, other players constantly change it with their actions. There’re wars of clans, cities can be seized or liberated, the resources’ production and improvement of economic conditions completely depend on players. The most challenging thing that we’re working on is to create a self-developing world where people manage economy. And we’ll do this.

Game world is really huge and full of mystery places (post-apocalyptic atmosphere won’t leave cold anybody). On the east, north and south we have a vast desert, on the west – a mountain pass. There’re two rival cities that are governed by their own leaders and smaller cities try to join them to survive. According to the legend, there’s a city on the east called “Skies” where people will find the rescue of mankind… But how can they do it?!

The Settlers Online

The Settlers Online

The Settlers Online (formerly known just as Castle Empire) is an engaging MMORTS from the world renown developer Ubisoft that lets players transform their simple plots of land into mighty empires. You’ll produce and trade valuable goods with friends, build towns and villages, and journey into the wild as you complete missions and engage in battles with anyone that stands in your way.

The settler series has been a long time favorite for many massive multiplayer online real time strategy gamers, so when Ubisoft announced that The Settlers Online (Castle Empire) was going to be free to play, gamers started to pay attention. Not only is Castle Empire exciting, fun, and free to play, but you can play the entire game in your browser window.

The new trend of these browser games is great, there’s no need to download multiple clients, check for driver updates, or any of that nonsense. Just open up your browser of choice (hopefully not IE) and play to your hearts content. The Settlers Online (Castle Empire) should be an exciting new addition to the MMORTS genre.

The Secret World

The Secret World

The Secret World from Funcom takes players into a different reality from their own. This MMORPG represents the world of today with a different view. As the world around players breaks down from plagues, zombies and other world ending disasters players join one of three different factions; the Dragon, the Illuminati and the Templars. These three factions have different stories, pasts and futures that molds the world around them.

The three different factions leads to a perfect system for PvP. There are three different modes that allow for different types of multiplayer experiences. If small skirmishes are what you’re looking for, fight clubs offer a small scale battle ring that can be done quickly with battles being as small as 2v2 or as big as 10v10. If larger scale battles sound better, the Battlefields and War Zones may be more appropriate. The Battlefield is a capture the flag like game that gives factions special upgrades and bonuses for winning. The Warzone is a 24/7 persistent PvP that changes as the three different factions fight over facilities. No matter which place you choose there is some form of PvP for any MMORPG fan.

One of the most interesting mechanics of The Secret World is character progression. Instead of focusing on levels and locking people into a specific classes, The Secret World does something different. Using certain weapons, skills and other moves gives players proficiency which unlocks new skills. Players can change their skills and proficiencies at any time.

The Secret World sets a very dark mood in an alternate reality from our own. The gameplay mechanics matched with the real world setting provide a fiction that is fun to be a part of. There is a ton of good stories in all three factions that are worth exploring. Check out this game because it is very unique.

The Repopulation

The Repopulation

This sci-fi MMO is an innovative sandbox game in which players have a whole planet to shape as they please through building nations and warring other nations in order to gain great swathes of territory. Use of political systems to keep the citizens of cities happy is an integral part of the game. However other paths can be chosen if you do not want to be involved in politics. Harvesting and crafting are important aspects of the game too. Whatever you choose to do in The Repopulation, you are guaranteed to have fun.

The action takes place on the planet Rhyldan, with the only known remaining human population fighting for their very existence. The indigenous life forms did not meet their colonization efforts with open arms. Worse yet, humans have managed to splinter themselves into warring factions.
The Repopulation has so many great and innovative features it would be hard to list them all so I will list the more important and fascinating content. For more in depth details please feel free to visit their website at http://www.therepopulation.com/.
Players can form their own nations in which they can design and build multiple cities and assign mayors to run them. They can recruit an army with customisable ranks and titles. Different levels ranging between Ally and Nemesis can be set regarding other Nations. Politics and Diplomacy are a huge part of the game.
An Advanced Generated Mission system allows us to create complex multi-stage missions which are tailored specifically for your character. Players can filter which types of missions they wish to receive, so only those missions are generated for them. Missions can have branching outcomes based on a player?s actions. NPCs can talk about things that have happened to them and to other players and NPCs. Your actions will be remembered by NPCs, and they may exploit your tendencies if you let them.
There are no levels in this game. Instead you level up skills by using them (Fallen Earth style). This features 75 unique skills, and 14 tiers within each skill line. Players are not forced into combat roles. Crafting, harvesting, diplomatic or other non-combat oriented skills can operate and progress independently of combat. Skills increase automatically through use. Abilities are earned and not given automatically.
Equipment is highly customisable to change appearance or stats. The ‘Fitting’ system is similar to socketing gems or runes in other MMO’s, however most is available to you very early considering you don’t have to reach a specific level to equip things.
The sandbox elements extends to whole areas of the world changing dramatically on occasion. If a settlement gets over run it can turn into a dungeon and drastically change the content in the area.
There are three types of pets in The Repopulation; Tamed, Genetically Engineered and Robotic. Tame animals when they are young, then have them slowly grow into fully matured pets if they receive proper care and feeding. Genetically engineer species and hybrids by splicing DNA and Tissue from different species. Robotic pets can serve a variety of different combat and non-combat roles.
The Harvesting system allows players to harvest their resources in both combat and non-combat related fashions. Over-harvested areas will run dry of resources and recover slowly, rewarding players for discovering more remote locations.
There are two distinct modes of combat: Action Mode and RPG Mode. RPG Mode works like traditional RPG combat. Action Mode allows players to control the game in ways similar to a First Person Shooter. You can toggle between these modes at any time. There are several twists to make combat more interesting including Momentum, Limb Targeting, Species Mastery, Energy Shields, Cover, and Postures.  The generated special abilities system for bosses will force groups or raids to adjust on the fly when fighting bosses, rather than simply looking up spoiler information on the internet.
In conclusion, The Repopulation is an amazing leap in sandbox gaming, going beyond most titles out right now in terms of how open-ended they have managed to get it. For people who want to engage in a dynamic and almost real experience this is the perfect game for them.

The Mighty Quest for Epic Loot

The Mighty Quest for Epic Loot is an action-RPG and tower defense game rolled into one. Developed by Ubisoft, The Mighty Quest takes players on two completely different paths as your main goal of collecting treasure and experience plays out. The game takes a light-hearted approach while players construct castles with deadly traps and monsters to protect your castle from deadly looters, while letting you take on other players castles in search for you own fortunes.

The game is split into two parts. On the offensive side you will venture into other players castles and try to get to the end by blasting through enemies and traps that they have laid out for you. This part of the game is more a traditional hack ‘n slash style like Diablo. Your character will gain experience and loot once, and if, you complete the castle, where you can then rate the experience.

On the defensive side you will create your own castle much like a tower defense game. Choose traps and monsters along with the areas that they roam as you try to build an impenetrable fortress. Your goal is to protect the loot at the end of your castle, you do this by trying to lay out castle out as difficult as possible.
