[/review]Wizardry Online is the most hardcore fantasy MMO ever created. The difficulty level is insane. The dungeons are brutal. There is no auto-healing. You will earn your levels. Your crimes taint your soul. Your allies could betray you at any moment.

Oh, and did we mention that when you die, you die forever? Whether your passion is adventuring, engaging in massive battles with ferocious monsters or hunting your fellow players, Wizardry Online won’t disappoint.

As of July 31st 2014, Wizardry Online will no longer be available in North America.

Wizard 101

Wizard 101

Wizard101 is a 3D MMORPG developed and published by KingsIsle Entertainment, featuring a magical setting with a polished and unique graphic style which will make playing the game an amazingly  entertaining experience.  Wizard101 is a highly polished game with plenty of lore and an original graphic style.  Play as one of seven Wizard types and thwart  the sinister plans of Malistare Drake while learning new spells and exploring the realms of Wizard101.

Wizard101 is a unique game where players take on the roll of a child wizard who has just enrolled in Wizard Academy.  Its obvious Wizard101 draws its inspiration from the widely popular Harry Potter franchise, but it manages to pull it off in style without feeling like a knockoff.  Anyone who plays this game will immediately notice how much higher the production values are compared to many other MMORPGs.  From character creation to the tutorial, the voice overs, interface, and even the game’s terrain look very polished.  New players chose which magic type to specialize in by answering a series of questions with seven possible outcomes to determine your class.

[/review]Wings of Destiny is a browser based fantasy MMO game developed and published by IGG. The game features four playable classes; the Knight, which is the tank class, the Hunter, which is the physical DPS class, the Mage, which is the magical DPS class, or the Priest, which is the healer class. What’s great about each class is that they can have different specialties which further enhance the fantasy gameplay. Knights can develop into crusaders or berserkers, Hunters can specialize as rangers or stalkers, Mages, which are the best DPS class in the game, can become sages or warlocks and the Priest mainly heal, but can also specialize in dark magic and become damage dealers as well.

Wings of Destiny character advancement has 4 main aspects: stats and items, souls, faith and skills. Stats will improve a character’s abilities. Players do not need to be concerned with all stats though, as certain classes won’t need to specialize in certain stats. Stats can be increased by wearing armor, which can be enhanced with souls, which are found after level 20. The skill panel lists characters abilities. Abilities become more powerful with every gained level. You can boost your attributes by using the Faith feature.

The game includes many activities including dungeons, events and boss fights. Many of these events may have level requirements, but leveling goes relatively fast in the early levels. The achievement system also helps players get rewards during the game. Wings of Destiny also has an auction house for player trading, pets to help in battle and a great PvP experience.

Wildstar

wildstar-game-feature

A new sci-fi MMORPG is incoming. Wildstar is set on a planet called Nexus where different factions are competing for dominance over it. This game is a colourful and stylish take on the genre with a whole menagerie of strange and wonderful creatures and a dash of wicked humour.

There are two groups seeking control over the planet named Nexus, the Exiled and the Dominion. There are currently six species, three in each group:

Humans have been wandering the Fringe in a ramshackle fleet for centuries and now they are looking to settle on Nexus. If the Dominion interfere with that, they are ready to fight.
The Granok were banished from their home planet by the Dominion and now live lives as mercenaries. They have come to Nexus to help the humans and settle a score.
The forest dwelling Aurin have made their new home on Nexus after their planet was razed by the dominion. They may love peace but they are willing to fight to get it.
The Cassian were chosen by destiny to establish the Dominion and gain control of the galaxy. They fight against the so-called vermin infesting it ? with style!
The warrior race called Draken are the foot soldiers of the Dominion. They are brutal and like to prove it.
Mechari are engineered to be highly efficient killing machines who make it their business to destroy traitors and spies in the Dominion ranks.

Currently there are four character classes to choose from:

The Warrior does things the old fashioned way, by using brute force and deadly weaponry to take care of business.
The Spellsinger uses a combination of quick firing pistols and magic spells to tear down their enemies fast.
The Stalker is a deadly assassin, stealthing through the battlefield to land precise strikes on their enemies.
The Esper uses their psychic abilities to confuse and control their opponents as well as inspiring and healing their allies.

As well as classes there are career paths to go down:

The Explorer discovers far-flung areas of the planet to claim for his or her faction and brings back valuable artefacts belonging to ancient civilisations.
The Scientist knows that knowledge is power and uses plants, minerals and dangerous alien organisms to discover new abilities.
The Soldier lives for epic battles, mastering weaponry and special combat skills as he or she climbs the ranks for fame, glory and fortune.
The Settler brings civilisation to this newly discovered planet by building new outposts and upgrading existing settlements to the benefit of your allies.

Wildstar is currently in its second closed beta with no release date specified as of yet. I look forward to seeing more details of this game as the concept seems solid and the media so far released looks vibrant and different to most of what we see in a typical sci-fi MMO. Keep an eye on this one people, it looks awesome!

Wild Terra

Wild Terra Game Image

Wild Terra is a Massively multiplayer online role-playing game with open world. The main idea behind Wild Terra is to survive in the wild nature while harvesting, hunting, gathering, craft, building, PvPing, sieging, treasure hunting, and more! The game is a hybrid between action-RPGs and sandbox games. There are no NPCs in the game, so the only way to get anything accomplished is to do it yourself or buy it from other player (or take it with force).

In Wild Terra you will explore a huge world where every player can find a place for him or herself to enjoy and search for discoveries.

The game also features PvP with no hand-holding. There are dozens of types of weapons and armor along with many different ways to use them in the combat system.

The game is currently still in development but if you’d like to play it right away, you will have to purchase a bundle for Early Access. The bundles start at $9.99 and go up to $99.99 depending on what different features you would like to help you experience in the game.

Wartune

Wartune

Wartune combines the best elements of gaming to create an addictive environment. There is a PVP arena where you can fight 1 vs 1 or 3 vs 3 for great prizes. You can test your strength in the many levels of the Catacombs. There is plunder to be had on the world map where you can raid other players cities. Hunt down villains or play whack-a-mouse for bounty hunts. There are many campaigns to do as you level up your hero in single and multiplayer dungeons. There is even a farm where you can grow seeds. This game has plenty to do and guarantees that you will never be left twiddling your thumbs!

Pros: A lot of different tasks to keep you going. Fun and engaging PvP. Can be left alone overnight without fear of total loss even though it is a RTG.

Cons: Takes a lot of time to get everything done in the day. Cash shoppers have a clear advantage. The chat filter is a bit messy.

Warhammer Online: Wrath of Heroes from BioWare offers an extreme, fast-paced experience which focuses purely on PvP combat. Based off the popular Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning, Wrath of Heroes drops the quests and places players in the arena.

Three teams of six players are pit against each other with the ultimate goal of crushing the opposition. Players have a selection of 10 different heroes to choose from which players can swap between mid-match to optimize circumstances. New spells and moves can be unlocked as characters progress via each character’s skill tree.

With a look that is reminiscent of the World of Warcraft series, this MOBA boasts quick, high intensity games with a variety of gametypes including Capture the Flag and classic Deathmatch. Don’t let the gorgeous graphics fool you, this game offers as brutal a beating as any game out there. Players who don’t pay attention or lack the required skill could easily be swallowed up in the chaos.

[/review]The developers behind Wargame 1942 are the same ones that developed Desert Operations before it, so this new military simulation game has quite the lineage to follow up on. There has been much hype around Wargame 1942 even before its official release. In the game there are two powerful armies, you may have heard of them before, the Axis and the Allied. The entire globe is thrust into an unrelenting chaos and while the Axis are intent on destroying the land and everyone in it, the Allied aim to build a new world order.

In the game you are a legendary hero who is sent to restore peace in the country. You will select a site to build and train brave warriors. You will create strong alliances and gain the victory and glory that you have always hoped to achieve. Wargame 1942 will take perseverance, wisdom, faith and courage in order to command. Your main goal will be to build up a large amount of resources using both agricultural methods and mugging your opponent. You will want to build up many resources in order to do well later in the game.

Wargame 1942 features an eclectic mix of military action and units. You will command tanks, infantry, and aircraft to help you defeat the enemies from burning the land. All the while you will be defending your base from all sides in this exciting MMORTS game.

Warframe

Warframe

I’ll admit, I wasn’t entirely sold on Warframe at first glance. It was yet one more free to play FPS in a veritable sea of titles plagued by pay-walls, poor gameplay, terrible graphics and unscrupulous developers. In short, I wasn’t really all that interested in checking it out. I’m willing to own up to my mistakes.

A week or two ago, I noticed one of my Steam friends playing the title – and that they’d been playing it fairly frequently for some time. I decided it couldn’t hurt to drop them a line – to ask them what they thought of the game. They sung the game’s praises quite highly, and I figured I might as well give it a fair shake. After all, it was free. What did I possibly have to lose?

Only several hours of time where I could have been doing something productive, but instead wound up shooting down angry mutant space marines and robots. So…yeah. It’s pretty damned fun.

The basic story of Warframe isn’t really anything special; basic, standard space opera fare:

You are an ancient warrior equipped with a powerful and ancient suit of armor -a titular Warframe – and preserved for centuries in cryogenic sleep. You’ve recently been awakened to a solar system completely unfamiliar to you, in which a terrible war is being waged. The brutish clone armies of the Grineer, suffering from centuries of genetic degeneration, try to exert their will over the galaxy, vast armies of monstrosities infected by the Technocyte plague consume everything in their path, and the merchant cabals of the Corprus remain indifferent to pretty much the whole conflict, so long as they can make a profit.

As one of the Tenno – the faction to which all players belong – your job is to wipe out the lot of ’em, restoring peace to the galaxy (presumably).

After a brief tutorial, you’ll dive headlong into your first mission; destroying the power generator on a Grineer ship. Here’s where the MMO component of Warframe comes in: missions are designed primarily around four-played co-op, and if you simply hop into a mission and start playing, there’s a good chance at least a few people might actually join your game. Of course, there’s also a good chance they won’t, and you’ll be in for a thoroughly frustrating experience trying to force your way through a mission designed for multiple people. There’s also a marketplace, clan system, and friends list, as well; though curiously enough, although I installed the game through Steam, the list is entirely independent of the client.

The multiplayer component is actually where Warframe encounters the most trouble – odd, for a game designed around four-player co-operative play. Level ranges of planets in the solar system aren’t shown, so finding somewhere appropriate to your level involves a lot of guesswork; there aren’t any latency indicators, either. What’s more, games in progress don’t show the relative level of players. I actually wound up with a player more than ten levels higher than me on an assassination mission (basically, a boss fight). To my knowledge, bosses scale with level.

That was a fun fight.

Matchmaking quirks and minor bugs aside, though, there’s an extremely solid game here. Combat is incredibly fun and fast-paced; you actually feel like some sort of space Ninja as you jump and run off walls, slash through hordes of enemies with your blade and gun down even more from a distance. Though it’s somewhat curious that there aren’t really any grenades (or explosives), that’s sort of offset by the fact that each Warframe has its own unique abilities. I went with Loki, a frame which is all about stealth. Other Warframes include Excalibur (specialized for sword combat), Nyx (who messes enemies up with psychic powers) and Volt (one word: zap).

All of this is underscored by an intense customization system, which allows you to equip your Warframe and weapons with augments that serve a wide array of different purposes such as granting special abilities, adding bonus damage or increasing your health/shields. You can also hop into the foundry and use your accumulated resources, drops, and credits to build powerful equipment from blueprints both found in missions and bought in the marketplace.

Of course, like any free to play, there’s a cash store. While there are a few benefits that definitely smack of pay to win (Sentinels, for example, are incredibly powerful), most of what’s is either stuff that can be unlocked by grinding or boosts that make it easier to grind.

Warframe is a well-made, entertaining MMOFPS which definitely has some decent chops even though it’s still in open beta. Even in spite of the other faults, the combat here really shines through. Give Warframe a try, if for nothing other than that.

[/review]Warface is a free to play 3D military first person shooter game developed by world-renowned developer Crytek. The game uses the CryENGINE which makes it one of the best looking free MMOFPS games out there today. Warface provides gamers with a constantly updated extensive PVE universe full of dramatic multiplayer co-op missions that reward teamwork and individual skill and a full set of class based PVP for unmatched competitive play.

A unique element in Warface that’s not typically seen in a MMOFPS game is the co-operative missions. These act as a sort of daily quest, similar to the ones you find in your typical MMO. When you log in, you will be presented with new missions that you can take a team of you and your friends on the complete. Difficulty of the mission is increased on day of of release and will tone down as subsequent days pass. Crytek is hoping this model will keep playing logging in again and again.

Closed beta is currently on-going, with a release date set for sometime in 2013.

War Thunder

War Thunder

As the clouds around you part, you can see them – several bombers, flying high over the sea. If they reach your destination, things are going to go pear-shaped, and fast. Gunning the throttle, you dive towards them, ready to pump them full of lead and send them into the sea. Suddenly – almost too fast to react – you hear the sound of gunfire. Your plane lurches, and you realize you’ve been hit.

Of course, it wouldn’t be that easy. Those bombers are accompanied by a few fighters of their own. You’re their target. Think you’re enough of an ace to take them down?

This ladies and gentlemen, is War Thunder – a free to play vehicular combat MMO that takes place during World War II. The game should immediately feel familiar to anyone who’s played World of Warplanes. Familiar…yet smoother. Shinier. More polished and considerably more in-depth. Compared to War Thunder, WOWP almost feels like it belongs in an arcade cabinet.

From War Thunder’s lobby, you’ll train your planes flight crew. modify your load-outs, select your faction, and install your upgrades. You’ll also be able to choose between a number of different factions, each with its own array of strengths and weaknesses. Japan, for example, is virtually unmatched in maneuverability, while Great Britain is fond of aerial weapons platforms which can’t necessarily move very fast.

Each plane has its own individual flight crew which gains experience as you play. If you’re looking to stick with the same crew the whole way through the game, you can transfer them between planes for a small retaining fee.

Your selection of available planes will be relatively small at first – gaining experience with a particular faction will allow you to access more powerful vehicles, while Silver Crowns (the default currency) gained by playing matches are used to purchase most items in the game. There is a real money shop which uses Gold Crowns as currency, but it’s quite balanced and there’s no unpleasant stench of pay-to-win hanging in the air around it.

Now, I said War Thunder was quite in depth. I wasn’t kidding. There are three primary game modes, each one designed to appeal to a particular brand of player. For the average gamer, there’s Arcade Mode: your basic “pick up and play” scenario, which I’d imagine will be what most people go for. Simply hop into your plane, and you’ll control it either through some rather intuitive mouse-and-keyboard controls or with a controller. Getting shot down is no big deal, as you’ll be back in the air within seconds, and reloading happens on the fly. Anyone from any nation can join any team.

It’s good, explosive fun.

Historical Mode, meanwhile, is a bit more hardcore. Players will need to learn how to take off and land their plane, as they’ll need to return to friendly airstrips in order to reload and repair between skirmishes. Players from different factions will be unable to team up with one another, while lack of an aim assist and with realistic gun physics makes dogfights all the more challenging.

Last, but certainly not least, Full Real goes full-blown flight simulator, putting you in the cockpit of your plane.

Add in the fact that developer Gaijin plans to implement naval and land combat in the near future(they already have some pretty decent AI running land and sea), and you’ve got a game that has the potential to be one of the best vehicular combat titles ever made. This one looks like quite the promising game indeed.

Oh, speaking of looks? War Thunder is downright jaw-droppingly beautiful, with an amazing soundtrack, to boot. 20th-century dogfights have never looked so sexy.

There’s one last thing I should note before I sign off for the day. Like Warframe last week, War Thunder is technically still in open beta. There are still a few glitches in the system that need to be worked out between now and release day. Keep that in mind when you play.
