[/review]It all started with a single request from my teacher. ?Please deliver those ingredients to the master chef. He will also be able to further instruct you in the ways of cooking.?. On my way to the big city I helped a small football team, who were viewed as underdogs at best, achieve greatness, took part in kart racing and dressed as a ninja and went around fighting monsters all the while gathering cards for my deck. By the time I reached the master chef, foams were coming out of his mouth and I was kicked out of the cooking guild for bringing shame to my former teacher’s name. Nevertheless, I headed back home and started decorating and arranging the place to my liking. I also bought a cat. Everything is better with cats.

The above is a summary of my first impression of Free Realms, an MMO directed at teenagers and children. You start off by making your character who is either a human or a pixie. The character creation feels somewhat limited compared to other MMOs, but it is distinct enough to make your character feel unique. Additionally, some things like face tattoos can turn you into the school bully you always wanted to be.

Set into the world of the Sacred Groove, your character sets out on his adventure or rather his life in that land. I say life because while there’s a sort of main storyline with some hints on things to come, it isn’t that noticeable – if at all – and most of the time you are left to you own devices. While this may indicate a lack of drive for playing, the freedom given to you overcompensates for that. Unlike other games like WoW, this game isn’t about the world facing a crisis and your rising reluctantly to the rescue. This game is all about you and what you want to be in this world. Do you want to be a chef? Are your interests lying in trading card games? Or do you want to be a footballer? In the end, it’s all about choices. As for me, I think I am on my way of becoming the next Yugi Mutto of this world, without the whole shadow realm nonsense of course. It’s time to duel!

Of course, for all of you who just want to take a classic MMO approach, there are 6 distinct combat jobs/classes : Archer, Brawler, Medic, Ninja , Warrior and Wizard. However, despite the number, we can notice that the Brawler, the completely free to play combat job, seems to be the template for every other job and the 2 jobs who are furthest away from that template, Archer and Wizard, work least well. Each class has 3 spells/actions by default and unlocks 5 more as they head to the maximum level of 20. Combat is rather simplistic and easy to learn however the game has some potential for interesting, but not hardcore, PvP. The game is intended for a casual audience after all. However that doesn’t make its mechanics shallow.

Combat in Free Realms is enacted as an instance. In other worlds no mob will attack you in the wilderness and you can fight them by clicking them as you would for the entrance of a dungeon. While this may feel weird to some people I am kind of relieved. If I wanted to relive the nightmares of Fel Reavers chasing me just because I stared at their cores wrong, I would play WoW instead anyways. The mobs are a lively bunch. Ranging from cute little dangerous critters, that would make even an Anti-Peta individual rage about animal cruelty in videos games, to evil snowmen that can melt your health and arachnids with their spawn that look cute and evil at the same time, they are sure to keep you interested! While nothing is too special or outstanding for an MMO that’s not necessary bad. Dungeons exist as well and you can brave them either alone or with friends. In terms of pvp the game is limited to classic dueling Ala WoW Style. While reaching max level with a combat class – or any class for that matter – doesn’t take that long, the final dungeons will keep you engaged for a bit as you go through them trying to find that magic underwear that will make you hit harder.

The job system brings a unique spin in all this. First of all, you can change between any job at any given time whether that is being a chef or being an archer. As of now 16 jobs exist but only a handful are available to be maxed out without a subscription. However, since all jobs allow you to do a test run up to level 5, you can decide whether or not you want to subscribe. Jobs include but are not limited to : various combat classes, chef, postman , kart driver, card duelist , adventurer and the list goes on. A downside is that while some of the jobs are well thought out others seem to just be thrown in with no tinkering or fine tuning. On the other hand the mini-games included in the leveling of some jobs, like the chef for example, are pretty engaging and fun. However for those not into mini-games, those parts may seem tedious and boring. Out of all jobs the post-man seems to be the most disappointing one for me. It’s pretty much a series of fetch quests from one NPC to another. While I always dreamed of being the delivery boy objected to the whims of various NPCs, I think I will pass on this one. Since we are on it, mini-games are abundant and varied. From puzzles to chess to tower-defense, Free Realms has something for everyone. For all I know, you could join this game just for its deep trading card game and not even bother with anything else. Now if you will excuse me, I got to check out the new booster pack!

Free Realms manages to have an engaging social experience as well. You can own houses and decorate them at will. The customizing options are astounding. It kinda felt like Sims 3 or Minecraft the first time I saw some of the creations out there. After you are done making the villa you always wanted, you can submit it online and other people can visit it and rate it at any time. For all those creative types out there, this feature alone can be pretty enticing. On the other hand, some players even go out of their way to organize parties, which can be summed up as large gathering of players goofing around playing mini-games or chatting under the sound of loud music. And for all those collectors out there, pets and mounts are here. You can ride motorcycles, tigers and even some vehicles that seem out of science fiction. For pets, you can have cats, dogs, chicken and some exotic ones. Needless to say the cuteness reaches dangerous levels. In my case, I have taken a liking to a baby dragon which I groom, feed and teach tricks. Before I know it I will probably get another one too. You can never have too much of cute.

The world is pretty bright and carefree as one would expect from an MMO directed at children and teenagers and only at a sub-area the tone gets any darker. You can find some nice spectacles like a forest with a crystalline lake or a nicely designed cave but nothing is too grand or breathtaking. The music as well is pretty lighthearted and upbeat at times. This can be pretty off-putting to some but considering who this game is made for, it is pretty fitting. If I can think of something negative, the fact that some of the most ?cool? content needs a subscription comes into mind. However, taking into account the fee and that most of the content can be played up to a point for free, this is not a big issue.

Free Realms is a nice addition to the MMO market. It’s casual no-strings attached approach brings a fresh air and it can always keep you busy. You will be going from one place to another and before you know it, you will forget why you were heading there in the first place. That is the core of the game. A mass of distractions weaved together into perfect harmony. You will always be busy and while this take on the genre might turn away some people, for those that are interested, Free Realms is nice, casual and pretty fun to boot!

Forge of Empires

Forge of Empires

Forge of Empires is a browser-based strategy game developed by InnoGames. In the game, players must, among other things, manage and produce resources, develop an army, gain control of provinces, and research their way through several pages of history and development.

You begin the game with your own plot of land.  A tutorial will walk you through the various menus and gives you options of what types of buildings to build.  You are taught how to build, research and unlock more buildings.  Like your typical city-building game, Forge of Empires allows you to build on various places on your plot of land.  One thing it does differently though allows you to move your buildings around, as well as sell them.

As your city grows you will need to generate more and more resources.  You will build up your army and send scouts out to ‘visit’ other areas of the map.  As you progress you will battle other cities, conquer new provinces and expand your empire.

The game is pretty straight-forward but gives you many options and new features that will keep you coming back again and again.

Winner of an MMO of the Year Award in 2013.

Forge

Forge

Forge is an action based Fantasy MMORPG by Dark Vale Games, SuperGenius, and Digital Confectioners. The battle system relies on the Unreal Engine 3, creating a real-time fighting system that relies on precision and timing.

There are 5 classes to choose from in Forge: the Assassin, Shaman, Warden, Pyromancer, and Pathfinder. Learn and master your preferred role and take on other players from around the world in intense PvP similar to that of Guild Wars, World of Warcraft, and WildStar.

Flyff

Flyff

Fly For Fun (better known as Flyff) is a 3D fantasy MMORPG with fun animated graphics. Start as a Vagrant then chose one of four jobs at level fifteen.  Once you get the level twenty you have the option to buy a flying broom or skateboard, which takes the game to a whole new level when you get to explore the large game world from the skies.

Flyff is one of the most popular free-to-play MMORPGs available.  Flyff has a great animated graphical style that?s easy on the eyes, but is beginning to show its age. First released in 2005, the game is continually updated and is on its 12th ‘version’. Like many Asian MMORPGs, players in Flyff start out as a beginner class and then choose a job upon reaching a higher level.

This game has a very light feel and its monsters are not exactly terrifying. Killing cute mushrooms and other forest creatures during the early levels does make way for slightly more sinister villains as the game progresses. Unlike games like WoW, Flyff takes a more grinding approach with quests not a key part of the progression, and having only recently been added at all.

Even after several years, Flyff still stands out as both an easily accessible and enjoyable MMORPG experience. The game?s large community and all the content that has been added over time make up for the game?s old age.

Florensia

Florensia is a 3D Fantasy MMORPG published by Alaplaya.  The game conquers something that many other MMORPGs don’t put much effort into, the sea.  Florensia offers great looking animated graphics and a special gameplay that they can claim all for their own.  The game is truly unique in that it allows you to play on both land and the sea, and you will have to conquer each in order to see any progress in the game.  But what doesn’t kill you only makes you stronger, and that’s where Florensia stands out.

Upon leaving your starting continent you are forced to take to the open ocean and test your sea-legs.  But don’t expect your hard earned skills and levels that you learned on land help you on the ocean.  Oh no.  You will be learning an entire new way to fight, new skills and a new leveling process while on the ocean.  But that’s only natural right?  You wouldn’t expect to take your sturdy land legs onto a boat in the ocean and think everything’s all fine and dandy.

All in all, Florensia is a great game that will give you many hours of fun and something a little different from the rest of the MMORPGs out there.  Give it a shot.

Firefly Online

Firefly Online

Firefly Online is a strategic MMORPG currently in development by Quantum Mechanix and Spark Plug Games. The game is based off the Joss Whedon cult classic TV show, Firefly. Playing as captain of a space ship, players will start with little-to-nothing and must work their way up, completing missions and trading with other players in the universe. The gameplay is inspired by the original TV show by emphasizing exploration and the player’s ability to survive in the Verse.

Much like Captain Mal Reynolds of the Firefly TV show, you begin as a struggling captain in the Verse. It will be up to you to assemble a crew and to customize a ship of your own. Setting out to explore, you can wreak havoc in space and planet-side all while interacting with other players — whether that be trading or competing. Unique social features have been promised to help you interact with other Firefly Online fans to make the most of your experience.

It was announced at Comic Con 2014 that the original cast of the Firefly TV show would be reprising their roles for the upcoming PC/Mac and Mobile Firefly MMO. While it’s still unknown the capacity to which they will be included, the announcement is momentous and reassuring to fans in keeping the game tied closely to the universe the TV show established.

Firefly Online is on track to release in Spring of 2015 for PC and Mac on Steam as well as on iOS and Android mobile devices. Cross-platform and cross-device playability have been confirmed, though no word yet on pricing models or compatible mobile devices.

Firefall

Firefall

Firefall is a legend, probably not for the right thing, it has been in beta forever. That means this F2P MMO Shooter is essentially a pay to play game. However, what people should be talking about is it?s gameplay. A sprawling open world built to 1/10th the scale of Earth awaits players when they get into the world. These vast open worlds are made for large scale battles with 100 or so players combining forces to take on quests, mine, craft and partake in one of the most unique MMO experiences to date.

Although there is a ton of players in every Firefall server, the different battle frames makes every player unique. Instead of splitting people up by classes Firefall chooses a different option. Every player picks a battle frame and equips mod items like equipping parts on a car. This give players a ton of choice to play how they choose.

On top of equipping parts to a battle frame, players can also choose different tiers of skills. Doing different actions in PvE and PvP grants players experience points. These experience points unlock horizontal choices along a tree for different upgrades. The best thing about the tiered upgrading is the way it works in PvP. The tracks allow for character progression while at the same time not leaving anyone at a disadvantage.

Speaking of PvP, Firefall features one of the most dynamic PvP experience for players. Want to stream your game? Want to play with large numbers? Firefall has both of these things covered. Red 5 Studios, working with West Coast Customs has built a mobile gaming station that will host up to 3000 player LAN parties across the United States to show off the massive battlefields players can expect when the game goes live.

A large world with unlimited possibilities awaits for players of Firefall. As soon as this game comes out of beta it will be an unstoppable force in the gaming community. Red 5 Studios has captured the heart of everyone in the MMO FPS category. Check out this game today!

[/review]Final Hour: World War II is a strategy simulation game by China-based ZQGame known for such games as Shadowland Online and Total Recall. As the title suggest, the game handles the theme of World War 2. But that is only the fundamental background and the moment you enter the game, you will realize the game primarily offers a city building mechanic equivalent of Operation Gamma 41 and War 2 Glory.

You begin the game as a mayor of an insignificant city, you are to develop your city, construct infrastructure, train your own troops, build up your defense and finally go to war.

To that end, you should first and foremost levelup your City Center that will unlock more buildings and functions. Moreover, resources (Steelmill, Lumbermill, Oild Rig and Farm ) play a vital role in building and training. So make sure you have all these plants built and upgraded to the maximum before you launch the attack against your opponents.

Although the game is a strategy game, it pays much attention to the role playing elements. For example, you may recruit historical figures that could take troops to the battlefield.

Final Hour: World War II feels exceptional thanks to its convenient tap control, realistic warfare combat, and addictive gameplay.

Final Eden – Defunct

Final Eden

“The world ended on December 21, 2012 in a cataclysmic event that left very few survivors. The few who survived have only recently started to rebuild on the backbone of past civilization and organized into tribes, but live in a world of anarchy. As a tribal chief, you must rebuild, defend your base from rival gangs, and assemble an army to battle for precious resources.”

What a great intro description to the game Final Eden, really makes me want to put down whatever i’m doing and give it a play!  Final Eden is a browser based real time strategy / city manager game where you must defend a small group of survivors from looters slavers and cannibals in the year 2040.

Final Eden is similar to other titles by Kabam.  Start out with a small town, build structures and armies and technologies, upgrade, advance, repeat.  The combat is automated, but you do have to strategically place your buildings and your troops, making it a little more realistic.  The game features PVP and PVE, Clans and real-time chat. The graphics are great and the gameplay is fluid and Fast.

Game Highlights

  • Build a powerful base on ruins of the old world
  • Defend it against bandit gangs with defensive turrets that vary in range and weaponry
  • Attack your enemies with an army of off-road vehicles including assault bikes and heavy armour vehicles
  • Deploy units skillfully to maximize destruction
  • Join an alliance for mutual protection

FIFA World

FIFA World

FIFA World is a free to play football MMO that launched worldwide on May 20th 2014. FIFA World is based off the popular FIFA series currently available on consoles.

FIFA is arguably EA Sport’s most popular sports franchise around the world, so it only makes sense that EA would adopt the free-to-play model to a game featuring the world’s most popular sport.

FIFA World takes a lot of queues from its console brethren in presentation and gameplay although the berth of features, gameplay mechanics, and graphical fidelity are lessened somewhat.

Much of this is intentional as FIFA World is not intended to cannibalize on the sales of the main franchise. Instead, the game proves to be a solid, casual football experience that can be picked up and played by sports fans of all skill levels.

There are two principle game modes: Ultimate Team and League Teams. Ultimate Team lets you create your own football club, complete with uniform, game ball, and stadium customization. You start off with a rather mediocre roster of real players and can obtain player packs through spending real money or currency earned through matches to mix and match players across various leagues.

New team members can be bid on, bought immediately, or traded to and from other players.

Players can then take their team into matches against the computer or against real players. Win enough matches and you receive more money to spend on further team customization.

League Teams mode is online-only and lets you chose your favorite real-world football club in one-on-one matches against live players. I appreciate that real-world clubs are included in the game, but it would be nice to play as them in single-player matches when you’re just looking to beat up on some computer AI or because you’re just looking to quickly jump in and out of a game. Also, League Team matches use match credits. Lose all of your match credits and you are unable to play for a certain amount of time. While match credits can be purchased for real money, you can also buy them with in-game currency. Being good at the game is also its own reward as winning matches helps match credits replenish faster.

Graphically, the game is a slight step behind the mainstream console titles, but this is likely due to allow for the game to be run across a variety of hardware combinations. The game looks solid enough and ran at a consistent 60 frames per second throughout.

The gameplay seems slightly simplified as well. Again, this is likely a conscious decision to broaden the appeal of the game and to also allow the game to be played without a gamepad. The game offers three control schemes – Mouse & Keyboard, Keyboard Only, and Controller. To be brutally honest, I hated the Keyboard and Keyboard & Mouse control schemes. While they were functional, they were far from accurate, and I never felt like I had full control over what I was doing. Plugging in a game pad makes FIFA World feel much more akin to the console games, and it’s much better for it. I’m not saying the other control schemes are impossible to learn, but save yourself some frustration and invest in a game pad if you want to truly enjoy FIFA World.

Overall, FIFA World is a fun time for football fans, and for a free download, it’s certainly worth a look. Check out the game on Origin or head over to easportsfifaworld.com to learn more about it. Fiesta Online

Fiesta Online

Fiesta Online is developed by OnSoft and published by Outspark. It is a free-to-play MMORPG with anime style graphics. The five classes available in Fiesta are based on general archetypes and the naming convention is pretty straight forward: Fighters, Archers, Mages, Clerics and Tricksters.

Each class has three ranks which open up certain specialization paths. Choosing a specialization (they are also called promotions) is mandatory for character advancement. Player vs. Player (PVP) is limited in Fiesta to specially designed areas which can have level restrictions.

As long as the players that join the PVP areas are not grouped, the general rule of such encounters is free-for-all. Other significant features included in Fiesta Online are the in-game weddings and the estate system.

The first allows players to propose to other players and if the proposal is accepted, the wedding is held in a special chapel that can accommodate up to thirty guests. After the ceremony is over the ?newlyweds? receive special in-game bonuses. The Estate System allows players to own and decorate their own private estate. Each of these houses can hold up to fifteen guests.
