Dragons and Titans

Dragons and Titans

You’d expect a game with a title like Dragons and Titans to be full of flame and fury. You’d expect that a MOBA meaning to compete with the likes of Dota 2 and League of Legends would offer up some quality, and bring to the table something unique. You’d expect flying a dragon about the battlefield and raining fiery death on your foes would be exciting.

Unfortunately, in this case, you’d be wrong on pretty much all counts. While Dragons and Titans offers up a promising selection of different characters (if it’s ever once been called a dragon in lore, gaming, or mythology, it’s probably a part of this game’s cast), it doesn’t really do much with them. Yes, every dragon has a unique set of mechanics and a completely unique appearance associated with it. And yes, your rider can equip any of a number of different legendary weapons to add new abilities to their repertoire. Promising as all those ides are, though…they still don’t work in practice.

The problem that lies at the core of Dragons and Titans is that it oozes mediocrity. For one, the gameplay simply isn’t all that exciting. Even the fastest dragons feel slow, cumbersome, and awkward, flying about lazily as you direct them in battle. As though to compensate for this, the AI in single-player missions is thoroughly incompetent, requiring absolutely no effort to take down.

It doesn’t help that the game’s ugly as sin, plagued with a series of clunky, unintuitive interfaces. To be fair, neither League of Legends nor the original Dota looked particularly stunning when they came out, but both titles looked better than this. Choosing my dragon and weapon felt like a constant struggle, and when I finally got into the game, the controls continued to present a significant problem.

Even all that mediocrity might be tolerable, were it not for the fact that everything – including upgrades – can be purchased with real money, adding an irksome ‘pay to win’ aspect to the game.

Virtually the only area in which Dragons and Titans doesn’t seem to fall short is its matchmaking system, which allows players to pre-select their roles before they find their way into a game. It’s a welcome addition, and one which would thoroughly mitigate many of the problems with Dota 2 and League of Legends. Unfortunately, that’s hardly enough to redeem the game’s other faults.

If the idea of roaring into battle on the back of a dragon excites you, look elsewhere. Clumsy mechanics, poorly-designed interfaces, and a healthy dose of pay-to-win makes this halfhearted entry into the genre one to avoid.

For players new to competitive online games, Dragons and Titans is quick and simple to learn. At this point in the game, there are over 30 unique dragons to control and 30 different weapons for each match. Even the most veteran MOBA player will find something new to master. Choose between multiple game modes: *5v5 PvP Battles *Team Co-Op *Single Player A new weapon or dragon is introduced to the game every week.

Dragon’s Prophet

I’ve always been a fan of the Pokemon franchise, and this free-to-play promised to mash the best aspects of that property together with dark fantasy, creating some sort of chimera brimming with awesomeness and joy. At first glance, it was one of the most promising MMOs I’ve set my eyes on in the past several months.

Then, after playing it for a few hours, I realized it’s fallen into the same trap as so many lesser free-to-play MMOs. The questing system is boring, bland, and completely uninspired. The free-to-play aspects of the game are incredibly frustrating and seem designed from the ground-up to nickel-and-dime the player, and the game takes grinding to an extreme that’d put Korean MMOs to shame. Worse, the game’s just about as polished as a rusty spoon ‘ it honestly feels like they rushed to release. That last one is what really ruins the whole experience in my eyes.

You know what’ Let’s focus a bit more on what Dragon’s Prophet does right. I want to really drive home the sense of tragedy here. On paper, it looks downright fantastic. You’ve got a top-notch user interface which provides pretty much everything a player could possibly need, a huge (and I mean huge) selection of unique dragons to choose from and level up alongside your character. Factor this in alongside the deep, complex talent trees available for each class, and you can literally tailor your entire load-out to suit your own personal play-style. It’s probably the strongest point in Dragon’s Prophet, and as such it’s a crying shame that it actually takes such a bloody long time to progress. Progression and customization aren’t the only areas where Dragon’s Prophet shines, though. The real-time combat is fast-paced, fun, and positively brimming with different combos and special attacks. It’s an exercise in quick-footedness that actually manages to put titles like Guild Wars 2 to shame. Factor in a beautiful and polished interface, and’ You know what, I’m making myself sad.

Where everything really starts to fall apart is in the design department. Enemies frequently forget the laws of physics and either move through terrain or meld with it, all the while twitching around like epileptic puppets. NPCs wig out and get stuck on every piece of decorative terrain in the room. Worse, the amount of grinding in the game is downright legendary. After you’ve gotten past the first hour or so, almost every quest feels the same. It’s just one thing after another after another after another ‘ certain stretches of the game actually rival Final Fantasy X for their long, linear corridors. Not only that, the further you get into the game the longer it takes to actually get anything done. That’s not a good thing.

The boring, uninspired design of the quest system in Dragon’s Prophet leaves little room for satisfaction or pride. If you’re grinding up levels, it’s because you either desperately want the game to be better, or because you honestly don’t have anything better to do. Seriously. Go and play Path of Exile or something. Alright, since we’re crossing over into ‘infuriated rant’ territory here, I’d say it’s about time we ended this. I wanted to like Dragon’s Prophet. I really did. When it caught my eye on Steam, what I saw was a title awash in potential and promise, with a premise which was, to my knowledge, wholly unique. Unfortunately, the unique and interesting elements in the title are overwhelmed by lazy, slapdash design and one of the worst implementations of the free-to-play model I’ve seen in months.

Maybe somewhere down the line, Dragon’s Prophet might be worth playing, instead of being an exercise in wasted potential. Maybe I’ll try playing it then. For now, I’m uninstalling.

[/review]Dragon City is a Facebook-based social game with the theme around dragon breeding, hatching and fighting. The game is developed by popular Facebook game developer Social Point.

The game is played like many of the games released by Social Point. In Dragon City you will start on a magical dragon island where you create dragons in your hatchery. While you grow your dragons you will earn gold by placing them in certain habitats. One of the more interesting and unique parts of the game is breeding your dragons. You can create all sorts of different combinations by breeding a fire dragon with a water dragon for instance. Then you can take your dragons and duke it out in PvP battles against your friends and rivals.

The gameplay is similar to what you would find in other Facebook games like Farmville. You can visit your friends Dragon cities and level up your dragons by completing chores and tasks. Thre is no energy bar, so you can play the game as much as you like without having to wait after doing a bunch of things around your city.

Dragon Born

Dragon Born

Dragon Born is Koramgame’s newest fantasy massive multiplayer online browser game. It also contains dozens of epic suits of armor, intense combat that is almost lifelike, and game play that is ultra smooth. Every minute detail has been polished and the in-game systems make a fun yet challenging, and leave you with a huge world to explore. The best part is, it’s Free to play!

Dragon Born Lore:  “Around 1,500 years ago, Farom was the most prosperous area of Kunalasi. This great prosperity was due to its rich resources and high quality goods. Its resources come from the Coldridge Mountains which contains the Night Forest with its abundant minerals and the Roland Valley with its many plants and herbs. Knowing this, a large number of dwarven craftsmen and powerful alchemists soon came to collect the various rare materials and open up their own shops. Farom soon became a hub for rare weapons, armor, medicine and magic scrolls. In time this attracted many traders, adventures, Elves skilled in magic items, and opportunistic Goblins skilled in Steam Technology. Farom was a very open society which welcomed all races and people, and was a model for the rest of the world. However the good times cannot last forever and a darkness was rising.

To increase its prestige further, Farom welcomed powerful mages by spending large amounts of financial resources to create the Mage Guild and Research Institute. Royal titles were even conferred to the most outstanding mages in order to win them over. These actions angered the Knights of the Silverwing Order. In the eyes of this conservative and old-fashioned order of knights and priests, the mages were a group of blasphemous heretics. Time and again, their feelings caused conflict to arise between the Silverwing Order and the Mage Guild. However, the favor held by the mages with the Grand Duchy of Farom has shielded them from harm, and they were eventually able to establish an assembly known as the Arcane Council at court to participate in government.

As the importance of the Arcane Council grew at court, their behavior slowly transformed from humble to domineering. Friction between themselves and others earned them even more enemies. Whether it be the horned people of the plains, the elves of the forest, the dwarves of the northern mountains, or even the wily goblins who never interfere with disputes, the people of Kunalasi are all having a hard time dealing with Arcane Council.”

Dogs of War Online

Dogs of War Online

As a tabletop gamer myself, I was immediately drawn to Dogs of War Online. The free-to-play strategy game is reportedly based on a tabletop war game of the same name. While I can’t say I’ve ever played the latter, after a bit of time with the former, I’m sorely tempted to. Although Dogs of War Online certainly does have its faults, it was, as a whole, both entertaining and engrossing.

Set in the war-torn world of Aarklash, Dogs of War Online pits three primary factions against one another: Light, Darkness, and Destiny. The Forces of Light are pretty much your vanilla ‘good guys,’ and are represented by humans and mages. Darkness, meanwhile, are the undead and unholy; creatures that have no business existing in the world. Finally, Destiny draws the Wolfen to its fold; wolf-like creatures who don’t share the black-or-white morality of the other two factions. These three groups are referred to as the Lion, the Ram, and the Wolf, respectively. When you start out, you’ll be granted access to one of the three; you can unlock more as you play through the game.

Army Points – immediately familiar to anyone who’s played a game like Warhammer – are used as a numeric representation of how powerful your forces are. Each unit has a particular AP value based on its stats and special abilities. Fielding a few ultra-powerful units might give you the edge, but you could easily see your bruisers taken down by a group of smaller, weaker foes. The units in each alliance follow the same design principles as one another, with enough variety that you’re free to develop your army as you see fit.

Take the force of the Lion, for example. Individually, they tend to be far weaker than the Wolfen, who gravitate towards savage units designed to roll over their foes in rapid succession. A Wolfen force may seem overpowered at first – after all, a single Wolfen can kill scores of swordsmen. With proper tactics, however, the brutes are rarely a problem – though the smallest mistake could see your army obliterated in a few turns.

The primary component of Dogs of War Online is engaging with duels in other players to gain fame and wealth with which they can build up their forces. There are other activities, as well; individual units can be sent on missions like tournaments, shakedowns, or kidnapping, removing them from your army for a set amount of time. Although the rewards for such missions are great and the investment small, there’s a chance your unit might end up injured or dead – though this decreases significantly with more skilled units. Oh, I should probably mention – each unit gains experience every time it’s used in combat, eventually leveling up and gaining access to new perks and abilti

The game looks and plays marvelously, with fluid animations, an easy-to-use interface, and aesthetically pleasing hex-grid maps. I won’t get too much into the details of combat, but suffice it to say, it’s quite satisfying, with a pleasing amount of depth. I’ll let you discover the rest for yourself.

The in-game cash shop is admirably designed, without even the barest hint of pay to win. Anything you can buy with purchased currency is available with in-game cash and a bit of effort grinding up the necessary funds. The end result of this combined with the game’s matchmaking system is that no player really feels like they’ve an unfair advantage over the rest; there’s really little difference between paying players and non-paying ones (save perhaps that the non-paying folks have spent more time in-game.)

Oh, and players can also construct their own buildings that will generate units for them, too, somewhat eliminating the need to use the cash shop at higher levels.

Now, Dogs of War Online isn’t perfect. There’s really no narrative to speak of, and the single-player missions are relatively bland as a result. Bad grammar and misspellings run rampant throughout the game, and the matchmaking system sometimes takes a bit longer than it should to track down opponents. It’s also still in beta, so expect a few quirks here and there. Still, it’s good for a bit of fun, especially if strategy games are your forte.
